Tron: Ares, NIN vs Daft Punk

I loved Tron Legacy. I love and still listen to the album as well as its remixes. It's helped me introduce my son to Daft Punk, as well as electronic music. Its special for a lot of reasons. I just saw the trailer for Tron: Ares. It looks good from the limited bits in that trailer.

I had to look into who was composing the soundtrack and Im really intrigued with NIN as the composer. Glad it isnt "Trent Reznor", but NIN on the wiki page about the film. I trust that more with their collective experience.

Im interested from this particular crowds experience, what are your thoughts on NIN taking the helm on a film that can be made or completely broken by it's soundtrack? The aesthetic appears to lend itself to the grittier sound that NIN is absolutely expert in, so Im personally really excited to see how it comes together.

Edit:

I am now aware that NIN is broadly recognized as primarily being Trent Reznor alone, I come from a time where that wasn’t true but the documented history shows otherwise and my memory failed here. Did not mean to offend fans, just not something I follow closely.

I am also starting to work through Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross whole scoring history, there’s a lot there, so I’m learning.

From what I see, the top left seems to be a juno 106, but I'm not sure about the rest. The right side looks like a Roland Super JV. Does anyone know what the other gear is??

His sounds and tracks are truly amazing!!

The mighty kick/bassdrum: who has the fattest/baddest/nastiest?

Just spend the better part of my day rearranging my gear (yup, the vid is the end result, everything powers up, midi and audio to be done) and ended up wasting an hour and a half with playing around with the RD-9's kick.

My main conclusions are that the Behringer pedals are rather noisy and that I'll probably always end up using samples layered on the top of the RD-9's kick.

But enough about me, what's your baddest kick? And how did you create it?

Synth Baptism Advice (serious)

Recently decided I need to cleanse myself of my synth transgressions (Behringer purchases) and I feel like getting dunked in water is a the best/easiest way. I have some questions though...

Is there anyone offering this service already? Is there a specific river I should go to in asheville or something? If getting dunked in water doesn't work what's the next best/easiest way to become pure again? I'm willing to travel anywhere in the world if it means people will stop looking down on me for being a b user.

Your favorite 12+ voice polysynths?

Howdy! So let me start this post we saying that I’m a degenerate when it comes to synthesizers. I currently have an Arturia minifreak, and drumbrute which are sensational! I love the minifreak’s software in the computer which makes it easier to navigate my presets and sounds that I’ve made. (Here’s the part that makes me a degen) I control my minifreak with my omnichord through midi. It’s a great setup actually because having the keyboard in front of me with it gives me the ability to play chord inversions that would otherwise be impossible on the omnichord. The struggle is, that with only 6 voices available to me on the minifreak, I find myself battling with voice stealing quite often. Essentially I can use the organ on the omnichord but not the strumplate. Not the end of the world but I like to make neat sounds with the omnichord in an attempt to make it less of a quirky girl instrument. lol

I’m completely open to recommendations for poly synths with at least double the voices of the minifreak. I’m thinking $3000 max. Bonus points if it’s bitimbral.

I’ve looked at the prophet rev2, behringer deep mind 12, and that’s really it so far. Please share your favorite poly synths with me (:

Help me decide on a Polysynth

TL;DR - OB6 or Prologue 16 or Summit?

Hello all!

I have a Nord Stage 2EX, which I love to bits, and what it does is perfect for my all-around activity.

Because it's a specific or "limited" one compared to the newer Nord Stage models, I can have the peace of mind to buy a Polysynth to complement it practically.

I want to own a board that lets me create more atmospheric, warm, and occasionally fat Pads, Synth "Plucks", etc. Mainly a board with a Vibe in the sound, for some live projects and mainly Studio work.

The main 3 contestants for me, after years of fiddling in stores literally all across Europe are:

  1. Sequential OB6 - Nothing too much to say. This board makes me smile each time I play it and create sounds with it. Yet I have the fear that the love story will end once owning one due to reasons like having a hard time fitting it in a mix. A criticism I heard from past owners of the board.

  2. Korg Prologue 16 - I played this board once in London, and it made me feel inspired on the spot, yet I have barely 20 minutes in total of playing one. And I must see, many Youtube videos and demos by users keep knocking me off. Especially with that Variable SDK-Powered oscillator. People created wonderful stuff with it.

  3. Novation Summit - Everytime I played it, it simply felt like a Synth that won't let me down, no matter what situation it needs to work on. Wavetables? You got it. Moogish creamy saw leads? Sure. Oberheimish Brass? Come on! Yet my current hesitation is that it's a board that's too deep for me at this stage, so the chunkload of options within might get me lost and uninspired.

More info worth considering: My musical genres of work are Rock, Prog, Indie, Funk, and Blues.

Oh, and once I finish with that trouble, I can buy myself again a Moog Little Phatty like I once owned, as I miss that boy, but probably for stable tunings and more synthesizing power, I'll get a Sub37 and get that over with.

Cheers,

R

How to recreate this synth?

I recently played the game "Undertale Yellow" In a certain area of the game a song began playing i really liked. In the sons they used a certain synth that i want to use myself too. I sadly don't really know how to recreate it.

I use these Roland Cloud VST's with FL Studio 2024:

D-50, JD-800, JUNO-106, JUNO-60, JUNO-60 CHORUS, JUPITER-4, JUPITER-8, JV-1080, JX-3P, PROMARS, SH-101, SH-2, SRX BRASS, SRX DANCE TRAX, SRX ELECTRIC PIANO, SRX PIANO 1 & 2, SRX STRINGS, SRX STUDIO,, SRX WORLD, SYSTEM-1, SYSTEM-100, SYSTEM-8, TB-303, TR-606, TR-727, TR-808, TR, 909, XV-5080

Can i recreate that synth with these VST's or others?

Song name: "Meltdown" From the Undertale Yellow soundtrack

Sample: Google Drive - UTY Meltdown Sample

Ambient Advice - 1300-2000 to spend

Want to get heavier into ambient music and get another addition to the family as a belated birthday present to myself before the ...increase...in prices.....

Have an OP-XY/OP-1F, Minifreak, Qi Etherealizer, Push 3. Really want a Solar 42f but worried about if I can put up with its tuning difficulties.

Have also been eyeing a Tasty Chips Gr-1; loving the sounds out of that one but have also heard the UI is a bit of a challenge.

Oxi One I'm also eyeing, it looks fun. Also Elektron's options look pretty nice. (Or a Deluge but eh..) There's so many options that look so dang fun.

Sorry if this is rambly. The edible has kicked in and I've been browsing Perfect Circuit.

Reface YC through separate synth’s LFO and envelopes.

Have a Yamaha Reface YC, and am looking to play it through a synth’s LFOs and envelopes while not using any of that synth’s oscillators. I am specifically looking at a Minilogue xd module. Is this an option at all? Any help appreciated.

Poly D Solo - Pomodoro Pulse Episode 5

Hey there, long time lurker. Here’s a little solo clip from one of my monthly releases (called Pomodoro Pulse, yes like the tomato). I’m a huge fan of the behringer synths. If you got an ear you can make anything out of the Poly d, drums included. If ur interested in more synth gooeyness, go check out Pomodoro Pulse on all platforms and the podcast version is on YouTube. Music made for studying! Also, the last track on Episode 5 was tracked entirely on the Poly D. That track is called Poly Deez. Holler.

Obsessed with the synths & production on an album – Any tips on how to recreate these sounds?

Hey everyone! First-time poster here, hope it’s okay to ask for help with some sounds I’ve been obsessed with.

I’m absolutely in love with this album from a Portuguese band called First Breath After Coma. The album is called NU (2019), and the production and arrangements just blow me away.

I’m particularly in love with the synth, keyboard, and guitar sounds — they create this really dramatic, dreamy, and nostalgic world that I find incredibly inspiring. I’d love to know how to recreate some of these sounds, or at least understand how they were made. I suspect a lot of them are software-based, but I’m not even sure what’s coming from hardware, what’s sampled, or what’s processed vocals, etc. If anyone can help break down even just one or two of them — or point me in the right direction / tell how would you do it — I’d be incredibly grateful! You can be as vague or as technical as you want, but the more technical, the better!

I’m not a pro producer at all — i've really only scratched the surface on synths and sound design. So if any of these are super obvious, I hope you don’t mind me asking! I'm using Logic Pro X and I mainly only use stock plugins, Spitfire LABS and Arturia's AnalogLab.

Here’s a list of the songs and timestamps of the sounds I’m curious about:
(there's also a video of them playing some of these songs on youtube that gives some hints on the gear they use, but the sounds are not quite what you hear in the studio version)

🎵 Please Don’t Leave

  • 0:31 – dreamy, lo-fi keyboard (taped? sampled? very warm)
  • 0:35 – that vocal chop / line (how do you turn a vocal recording into this?)
  • 0:44 – bass: 808?, round, smooth, maybe filtered, glued into the mix

🎵 Change

  • 0:02 – lush chords (what kind of synth would this be?) and the lead melody (could be a vocal sample?)
  • 0:15 – rich brass-like/ string-like synth or maybe several layered sounds?

🎵 Feathers and Wax

  • 0:00 – intro keyboard - atmospheric synth sound that sets a pretty smooth tone
  • 1:18 – the combo of this distorted bass and lush keys - both sounds are amazing
  • 2:28 – is this a vocal pad? sampled voice? or just lots of effects on recorded vocals?

🎵 Uneasy

  • 1:26 – kind of an arpeggiated synth or texture, very moody

🎵 Heavy

  • 0:00 – the intro chords are so dramatic and cinematic. Feels like a real horn section.
  • 0:11 – reversed melody (feels haunting, might be guitar?)
  • 0:51 – whatever is going on here is amazing: sounds like guitar with some kind of continuous distortion, plus other layered stuff I can’t identify

Thanks in advance for any help or insights! Super excited to learn a little and hopefully recreate some of this magic myself!

What is the right way to route a po-12/20 through a hydrasynth and hx stomp?

Would the chain order be po -> hydra -> hx, since there is only one input to the hx? or would I be able to route it into the return knob?

Just wanting some little drums for jamming - not really looking for anything more complex. Something that keeps beat in the background but is not ran through a computer. Trying to make a hardware setup and just want something bare minimum for the drums. Wanna make sure it’s possible with these PO devices before buying one.
