When the villain is the best part of a work generally considered to be bad
 in  r/TopCharacterTropes  1d ago

Ben Affleck read a fuck ton of comics. It’s famously why Daredevil is such a sore spot for him - he really set out to be the next Christopher Reeve but couldn’t salvage such a lousy script.

I imagine Affleck and MCD got on very well due to their shared investment. They certainly had a lot of chemistry during those brief scenes together, it’s a shame there wasn’t a real discussion between Murdock and Fisk - but to quote Harrison Ford, ”It ain’t that kind of movie.”

Story idea:

Tetch is released from Arkham for whatever reason and ends up living under a bridge. A precocious girl takes him home and convinces her mother that it’s their good duty to take care of him. Neither of them know who he is.

He finds a job repairing watches but the mundanity of real life crushes down on him, so he becomes more and more involved in the girl’s life, his delusions returning in the form of a white rabbit that convinces him the girl is Alice.

By the time the mother realizes who Tetch is, it’s far too late. Tetch brainwashes the mother and kidnaps the girl, determined to return to Wonderland - by killing them both with a poisoned tea party.

Batman arrives, but it’s the girl who defeats Tetch, saying that she was the only person who had faith in him - and now that he’s broken that faith, she doesn’t believe in him anymore.

Due to Tetch’s fantasist, literal-minded ways, he enters a catatonic state, because if Alice doesn’t believe he exists, then he clearly doesn’t. The story ends with Tetch being administered back to Arkham, blissfully stuck in a Wonderland fantasy.

An orderly notes that Tetch’s wristwatch is broken, stuck between seconds.

One of Michael Che’s most underrated lines:

”I just love watching Mike Pence during all of this. He's a button-upped conservative Christian. Now, he's gotta go ride or die with Caligula.”

Even better because when Pence refused to ride (Jan 20th) he almost died. Trump is very much the archetype of a mad emperor in a declining nation.

What movies have this kind of vibe?
 in  r/okbuddycinephile  6d ago

Vincent Gallo just sucks.

He said ‘66 was a satire about how libs blame everyone but themselves, then blamed Christina Ricci (then 18) for not being a good leading lady, blamed Angelica Houston for the movie not making Cannes and blamed the DOP for a lack of vision.

It’s hard to overstate how much he blamed everyone else for his mediocre project not becoming a modern classic - his project about whiny failures.

A third term would be darkly fascinating.

Look how much he’s declined in eight years.

By 2028 he’ll be getting the Dianne Feinstein treatment, wheeled around for a thumbs up and a signature every now and again. Musk and Vance will make up conversations they had with him when he’s actually locked in the residence all day, watching reruns of The Apprentice.

The same thing happened to his own father and he was responsible for it. Seems fitting that he’ll also end up in a fake office, talking into a phone that’s not plugged in.

With presidential medicine, the hardware can be kept going long after the software has been wiped out.

This is true but I prefer to think that the Time War triggered the Doctor’s “no guns” policy.

Which is a double-edged sword. On the one hand it does make the Doctor unique but on the other I’d love to explore One’s revolver collection (I’m assuming they’re mostly 19th century pieces) or go clay pigeon shooting with Three (he’d definitely use a bazooka).

Normalize deranged old dandies with too many guns again. Or at least give the Doctor a sword. Three loved a duel.

Leaving the MCU is like breaking up with that one person who rocked your whole world.

Yeah you’ve got your freedom back but now you’re trying to convince everyone that the porcelain hedgehog collection isn’t a nervous breakdown.

You just want that ass (money) back and you’re scared that you’ve thrown away a future (career) that might’ve been.

Hot take: People that criticize Lincoln’s undemocratic actions during the Civil War are really dumb
 in  r/Presidents  8d ago

You joke, but I did used to be pretty neutral!

It wasn’t until I saw a play that George Takei wrote/starred in about the Japanese camps that I truly appreciated how fucked the whole thing was.

Going to the theater is very mind opening, as Lincoln can attest to.

Idk man it was a little much. Very edgy for a huge audience of kids.

Not a fan of TROS (like watching it/hate thinking about it) but I think people use the myth of the ‘great unmade script’ to make themselves feel better about what they actually got.

Jodorowsky's Dune seems revolutionary on paper but would’ve probably been unwatchable.

Idk if it’s a little too “edgy 90s,” but this sounds like a killer story for David Lynch to adapt. RIP.

If Ncuti Gatwa leaves Doctor Who sooner than expected. Who do you think/want to play the next Doctor?
 in  r/gallifrey  11d ago

Lydia West is an interesting choice. I’d say she’s too young but she’s actually 31 so maybe I’m just used to seeing her play younger characters - same as Ncuti Gatwa in Sex Education.

Personally I’d prefer the actor who played Lydia’s mom in Years & Years, T’Nia Miller. There’s something very wise and ethereal about her.

Whattaya hear, whattaya say?

I was rewatching the episode "Kaisha" the other day and started wondering what might've happened to Agent Harris after the events of the show. Here's what I came up with:

Shortly after the REDACTED of Tony Soprano, Dwight Harris resigned from the FBI. The official reason was to spend more time with his family, but he quietly admitted to several colleagues that he'd gotten too close to the DiMeo crew, affecting his integrity and efficiency as an investigator.

For the next ten years, Harris wrote a series of novels called Made in America, about a depressed gangster called Nicky Alto and Alto's struggle to balance his personal and criminal lives. The novels were critically panned as provocative and pretentious schlock, but commercially successful, with "Little" Carmine Lupertazzi buying the film rights. Made in America was adapted into several straight-to-DVD movies, starring Daniel Baldwin as Nicky Alto.

By 2017, Harris had grown bored of schmoozing with authors and Hollywood d-listers. After the death of Frank Cubitoso, Harris accepted an invitation to fill Cubitoso's role as chief of the FBI's New Jersey division. Harris quickly became bored of this, too, as without any field work or dynamic cases, he found himself writing reports about street dealers and pedophiles.

In 2022, Harris attempted to break out of his boredom by entering politics, securing the Republican nomination for New Jersey's 1st congressional district election and resigning from the FBI for a second time. Harris lost the election in a humiliating blowout, securing only 35.2% of the vote. With his finances secured but his reputation and self-confidence ruined, Harris quietly divorced his wife and retired to New Hampshire, where he developed a online gambling addiction.

In 2025, Harris nominated by the Trump administration as Director of the FBI, a wild card candidate whose media appearances had made him popular with the President. Facing $200k of gambling debts, Harris reluctantly agreed, but faced a grueling congressional hearing that dredged up Harris's connections to the DiMeo's, including the murder of Phil Leotardo. He was also accused of profiting from money laundering by Lupertazzi's film studio.

Although Harris had enough votes to secure the nomination, he withdrew his candidacy after what he described as a long, hard look at his career. Privately, Harris concluded that he had succumbed to the same demons that had plagued Tony Soprano, whose memory now haunted him.

On March 25th 2025, Dwight Harris died from an accidental overdose of sleeping pills.

I know, I know. Always with the scenarios. What do you guys think happened to the characters after the end of the show?

Anyone feel post Hartnel 1st Drs are bad?
 in  r/gallifrey  14d ago

I’ve given Bradley a lot more leeway after rewatching An Adventure in Time and Space.

Like you said, he’s not a soundalike but he’s a damn fine actor and he gave 110% in his portrayal of William Hartnell, it was an incredibly touching and humanizing tribute to an incredibly important man.

Bradley earned his appearances as the First Doctor based on that alone. His contribution to the 50th anniversary didn’t get as much attention as it should have so I’m glad he got to pick up a few more paycheques afterwards.

If Reagan Developed Alzheimer's During His 2nd Term And Was Diagnosed, What Would've Happened?
 in  r/Presidents  15d ago

The difference is that FDR’s polio was just a physical condition. Yes, it was concealed, but that was due to social attitudes at the time, so I’d argue that it was totally moral and necessary.

Concealing Wilson’s stroke, however, was completely reckless. He was erratic, confused and unfit for office, which left the big decisions in the hands of his advisors and his wife, who nobody elected.

Doctor Who Season 2 episode titles revealed | Doctor Who
 in  r/doctorwho  15d ago

RTD has a bit of Stephen King about him. The endings often buckle under the weight of the ideas.

Which has never been a problem outside of Doctor Who. He sticks the landing in all his dramas and almost all of those dramas are excellent from beginning to end.

I think sci-fi/fantasy brings out a sugar rush in him, as in all these exciting elements make it harder for him to focus on the mechanics of storytelling.
