Why is it that when there is a protest in America, people always say they are paid actors?
 in  r/NoStupidQuestions  15h ago

Look up the "firehose of falsehood" technique. It's a calling card of fascism, and the lies that stick are pretty erratic; this just happened to be one.

French media reports dozens of thousands at protest in St. Paul

Ngl Fr*nch might have the stupidest counting system I've ever heard of -- even if this isn't an example of it now I'm thinking about it and grumpy.

Gotta find the non-official ones that say something like “no rdm” or “flourish” in the title.

Find a death match server, equip 2 training swords and drop one in front of a high level player. If they’re not a dick they will coach you.

Minnesotans Showing Up for Hands Off! Rally
 in  r/minnesota  1d ago

Okay, I saw MPR post that it was an estimated 25k for this protest alone -- so about 1/4 the size of the Women's March in 2017. You were right!

What’s something that happened in history that sounds completely fake but isn’t?
 in  r/AskReddit  1d ago

The Taiping Rebellion.

Dude in 1850s China had a dream he was Jesus Christ's younger brother, ended up leading a messianic army/cult in a yearslong rebellion that took over more than 1/3 of China, forcibly converted people to their version of Christianity, and ultimately left more than 22 MILLION people dead.

And nobody in the West has ever heard of it.

That's an absolutely insane turnout for Brainerd!

I think this might have been an early photo of the protest, it ended up spilling past the road and onto the next section of the Capitol mall.

You're not wrong -- that being said, I think there's a lot more frustration with the mainline Democratic party this time. It was heartening to hear multiple speakers talking about Gaza today.

Sorry you're being downvoted for being right, friend.

Okay, now, about NB characters in fiction
 in  r/NonBinary  1d ago

I believe Pratchett and/or Gaiman has said that the two main characters were meant to be canonically nonbinary!

Discussion Smoke then edible or edible then smoke?

If you are taking both edibles AND smoking in the same session, which do you prefer to do first?

I honestly flip back and forth; it seems that conventional wisdom would be to do the edible first and augment with the smoking, but I sometimes like to go the other way too. I can't tell if it's analogous to the "beer before liquor you've never been sicker/liquor before beer you're in the clear" saying or not.

For the last one at least 1/3 of the time speakers were shitting on the Dems; doesn't seem very party line.

For all the naysayers commenting "protests do nothing": have you ever been to a live concert? Or a live sporting event? If you had a good time, chances are you were more invested in the band/team afterward. Does watching the band/team play on the TV have the same effect? Maybe a little, but nowhere near the same amount.

Protests are the same thing but with politics. The "real work" comes after from the people who attended, got all fired up, and are now more invested and looking for nuts-and-bolts ways to get involved.

How do people manage to work five days a week without burning out?
 in  r/Adulting  3d ago

We manage because capitalism threatens anyone who doesn’t with homelessness.

It’s no coincidence that you feel this way; the 40-hour workweek was premised on the idea that one job would support two adults AND their kids, while leaving the adult not working outside the home to do all of the necessary unpaid domestic & child rearing work. Now most families need both parents to be working outside the home, but the amount of unpaid domestic & child rearing work remains the same. In other words, you’re working twice as hard as your ancestors did.

Did I come from a crappy red state? Or are MN public schools just really that good?
 in  r/minnesota  3d ago

To be fair, there is legitimate criticism of Walz from the left. His Operation Safetynet during Chauvin’s trial was widely decried as unnecessarily infringing on civil liberties, especially the 1st Amendment right to protest. He also went pretty hard against protesters legally, even stepping in to encourage prosecutors to not drop charges for some mass arrests.

do trans animals exist?
 in  r/trans  3d ago

Not in the same way humans do, no. Gender requires culture and communication. The ability to both conceive of and reflect upon an identity like gender just requires an awful lot of factors, and imo for this reason is probably unique to humans. But that’s just my 2 cents.

A little friendly fire?
 in  r/technicallythetruth  3d ago

Fair point (neither can I lol), but my point also stands that women's sports would be dominated by trans women if it was genuinely an issue; to my knowledge, trans women are even less represented in women's sports than they are in general society statistically, and even those who are in sports generally are kinda average.

Not to use her as an example again (but there really aren't others), although Lia Thomas won the race that made her a public name she didn't break any records. Multiple cisgender women swam faster than her and did break records (27 of them, according to a cursory Google search).

Protest, Hands Off
 in  r/TwinCities  3d ago

You can do it -- this is a big one, but also one that is very unlikely to see any sort of police repression. Think of it as a concert but for politics instead of music.
