My understanding is that a vet would have to cut it out and go fairly deep in order to prevent it from ever coming back. Apart from the one time it ruptured, it never bothered him, so we chose to just let it be rather than have it surgically removed. You may want to ask your vet for advice because there's a non-zero chance it could be malignant.
