In this post, I kept track of every 2004 movie's CinemaScore (at least, the ones that got it). I plan to post for each subsequent year until 2022, one year per weekend. My intention is to see the evolution of each year and how the grades can either help or damage a movie's legs.
I plan to delve into each year and each movie that got a grade. While CinemaScore was founded in 1979, we didn't get a grade until 1982 and we didn't get full information until 1986.
Before starting, some notes:
This list is based on multipliers/legs. In this case, domestic total/domestic opening weekend = multiplier/legs.
If a movie opens on Saturday or Sunday (like on Christmas Day), I will use its first full weekend (Friday through Sunday).
The opening weekend is based on its first wide release (600+ theaters).
If a movie never makes it past 600 theaters, then its biggest weekend number will be used.
The figures are all taken from The Numbers and Box Office Mojo.
In 2004, 137 movies received CinemaScores (2003 had 130). How did it go?
A+
4 movies (2.91%) managed to get the rare A+. Generally, this indicates exceptional word of mouth and guarantees a long and healthy run. Of course, the bigger a movie opens, the weaker legs will turn out to be. These movies averaged a 4.99x multiplier. In comparison, 2003 had 2 movies with a 5.31x average multiplier.
Note: The Polar Express' numbers included mutliple re-releases throughout the years, which added $26 million to its total. If we exclude them and get its original $162,775,358, it has a 6.97x multiplier.

B+
38 movies (27.73%) managed to get the grade. This is where things get interesting. Generally, it indicates average word of mouth. The audience didn't love it, but didn't hate it. For some niche movies, this should be a fine score. But for IP-driven movies, this should be concerning as fans are more biased to the movie itself. These movies averaged a 3.33x multiplier. In comparison, 2003 had 33 movies with a 3.62x average multiplier.

Only one movie (0.72%) managed to get the grade. The most dreaded grade. Word of mouth is completely dead and this will drop like a rock. This movie averaged a 4.80x multiplier. In comparison, 2003 had one movie with a 2.29x average multiplier.
To date, this is the best multiplier for any movie with this grade. However, it should be noted that it opened on Christmas Day on a Saturday. In these posts, the domestic opening accounts for the first Friday-thru-Sunday gross. If we used its first Saturday-thru-Sunday as its domestic opening ($6,163,306), it has a 3.60x multiplier.

Some real head scratchers in hindsight. Spider-Man 2, Collateral and Eternal Sunshine are way too low.

This score is never about just quality. It’s about meeting expectations and leaving a good feeling with the viewer. Great films that don’t do that often get low scores. Mediocre films that do often get high scores.

It’s interesting that so much of Harry Potter’s box office comes from overseas markets. It ranked sixth domestically but second worldwide (only behind Skrek 2).

Shrek 2 had the best multiplier of any movie to open with $100 million+ until Top Gun: Maverick smashed its record.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou had a grade D ??
It was a great movie, I know Wes Anderson isn't for everyone but I'm even more surprised knowing that people who go to his movies usually know what to expect.
Anyway, great research, I appreciate the effort, keep it going

I’m surprised The SpongeBob movie was that low. What happened in “Alexander” that made it that hated by audiences?
6
u/SanderSo47 A24 Dec 26 '22
Alexander had very terrible reviews. To top it off, it lasts almost 3 hours and a consensus is that it's so boring with very little action. The audience probably expected something like Gladiator or Troy (which opened just a few months before) and they didn't get any of that in Alexander.

I remember this movie was surrounded by controversy. It had a huge budget and was expected to receive awards (it was a Oliver Stone epic after all, just a few years after Gladiator). But the casting wasn’t well received (Colin Farrell, coming from Daredevil, and Angelina Jolie, who had the worst agent ever after she was nominated for Girl Interrupted) and the discussion about Alexander's sexuality hurt it. Yeah, 2004 seems so close, but also so far away.

Sideways should technically have its next weekend as the opening weekend since it expanded by almost 1000 theaters, so its multiplier is 11.2.

Thanks. For some reason, in the CinemaScore search bar, it says 2004.
Fixed now.

Why is Closer got D? It was nominated for numerous award giving bodies and won some.

Passion of the Christ getting an A+ is insane to me. There was so much controversy surrounding the violence and religion is such a complicated subject on this kind of scale. Noah got a C, Exodus: Gods and Kings got a B-, Son of God received an A-. Small Christian movies like "Breakthrough" and "I Can Only Imagine" got an A and A+ which makes sense for those kinds of films.
For a rated R film and the subject matter, not to mention the language element, Passion of the Christ's box office run is way more interesting than any action film.
The Village's C grade tracks since it was marketed as a horror film, but it's still impressive that it made as much money as it did.
I'm kind of surprised Suspect Zero is so low. Taking Twisted's score into account, I guess 2004 audiences were over this type of dark thriller film. Suspect Zero wasn't awful in my opinion.
Fahrenheit 9/11 squeaks in the top 20 without receiving a cinemascore.
