Reminder: No Survey Questions
Hey everyone! I just wanted to take a moment to remind you all that this subreddit is answers-based—it’s meant to provide clear, informative responses that someone could find useful while searching for answers on Google or other search engines. Lately, I’ve noticed an uptick in survey-style questions (e.g., “What’s your favorite __?” or “How many of you __?”).
These types of questions are not a good fit for the purpose of this community. They don’t create content that is useful for others to search for, and often lead to broad discussions that aren’t about providing a clear answer. As a result, I’ve been removing posts that violate this rule to maintain the quality and focus of the subreddit. Even if that post has a lot of replies as the OP obviously didn’t read the rules before posting, or cared.
If you’re unsure if your post fits, ask yourself: Would this question result in a useful answer for someone looking for a specific answer or information online? If not, it’s likely more of a survey question and violates rule 2.
Thanks for understanding and helping to keep the subreddit on track! 😊

why are there so many crypto-currencies?
Along with Bitcoin, Etherium, Tether and DOGE, there are dozens, if not hundreds of cryptocurrencies with new ones popping up all the time. Why are there so many, and how do they gain traction? I just don't see how what the point of having all these different currencies is, when they all do exactly the same thing.

When did the name of Reddit (when searching for the site on Google, at least) go from “the front page of the internet” to “the heart of the internet”?
Perhaps I’m just blind, but I have been opening it as a bookmark for a while now; so, how old is this change? Or is it just an April Fools thing, that hasn’t been changed back yet?

Why can’t I see videos under TikTok sounds?
Usually if you save the audio you can go to ur profile and see all the videos under the sound. Now the 3 lines under the sounds are gone so you can’t see any other video using it. Any reason for this or solutions?

What level of incest is acceptable?
I recently did the math and found out that most people on earth likely are cousins to a closer degree than we’d expect. For instance, a 10th cousin shared an ancestor with you around 250 years ago. If you were to do an ancestry test with your significant other, what degree of cousin would make you two split up.

Help! Do I have a blood clot?
Could a blood clot look just like a red circle under your skin? I think I may have a blood clot it hurts very badly like somthing in my finger and send shooting pains up my thumb. It’s red all around it and if I press on it I can see a red dot deep beneath the surface.

Why are so many people upset that a mosque is being built 40 minutes away from the Lake District?
Seems silly how so many people are upset about this.

Just bought my first home and I am looking for the floor plan (Norwalk, CA)
Hi, I have recently bought my first home and looking to renovate. I have asked my agent and seller agent for the floor plan of the house but they don't have copies of it. The house was built in the 50's and I tried looking at the Norwalk City planning and development website to apply for a copy but can't seem to find the option to apply online. Is anyone familiar on how to get a copy from the city? Thanks!

Was it common to dial into a computer in the 80s?
Or it was just a nerd thing? Did people who loved rock n roll for example not even know about it?

Why do the west part or some people use toilet paper instead of water when cleaning their bums?
As someone who grew up in a country that uses water to wash, I never understood the popularity of toilet paper... Thank you!

Pre-employment drug testing for DNR
I recently excepted a job in the forest resource division of the DNR. The job requires a pre employment drug test, however, I heard that Michigan has done away with marijuana testing. Can anyone confirm this?

What's the difference between relating to someone's issues and making yourself the center of the conversation?
I'll give an example: if someone is ranting and raving to you about a shitty professor they have for one of their lectures, and you chime in about your experience with another shitty professor, would that mean you're making yourself the center of the conversation or are you just connecting with the person your speaking to? How can one tell the difference?

The tape used for flexible fabric bandaids is much better than all of the other regular medical tapes but nobody seems to sell that fabric tape in a roll.

Do y'all think there's something spiritual/supernatural in the way we are all naturally drawn to certain things, that were created by other humans completely unrelated to us, like how some people like sports and other kinds of media, like all different things?
I've been thinking (I'm a Christian) and my brother and I have discussed that according of course to our beliefs in God, a supreme creator of all that's on earth, that when we create things, it's all a manifestation of God's creative power through us, like how children are often a reflection of their parents, of whatever and wherever they came from, both physically and internally. So it's like what if all human inventions and discoveries are simply the supreme creator in us, same way some people feel about magic simply being science that hasn't yet been discovered, or that we just don't understand yet. So what if also all these inventions are things that already exist in "heaven" or the higher spiritual dimension that we can't tap into. Maybe kind of like how we feel about aliens having advanced tech and they're just waiting for us to catch up. Or maybe we can create things that have never been there like how God created us out of nothing, well not entirely out of nothing because we were apparently supposed to be according to his image. I think this theory is really cool. And I also think that religious people probably don't fully understand the nature of spiritual things, that's why I don't have much of an issue with the idea of God being mysterious because it makes sense, according to scripture and faith we are at a lower dimension, we can't see it all, even according to science we can't see all things, our eyes are limited. Omg sometimes I get so excited thinking of a time when science and spirituality will evidently be seen to interconnect

Answered Why does a Treasury Department agency protect the president and other VIPs?
The Secret Service is an anti-counterfeiting agency under the Treasury Department. Why do they provide protection details for presidents (current and former), their families, Cabinet members, visiting dignitaries, and so on? Why not another agency like the FBI? Why not an agency specifically made to provide VIP protection details?
Edit:
After trying to figure this out for several hours now (post is only about an hour old, but I've spent a decent part of the afternoon trying to find an answer), my wife finally found an answer.
The answer is "because they do."
Ok, a little more satisfying than that. But only a little.
Apparently, the Secret Service provided a temporary protective detail to Grover Cleveland back in 1894. It was kind of a stopgap solution. It wasn't meant to be a permanent solution. I guess some politicians in Congress had a bit of a fit about the President having a bodyguard and how it made him look like a king (because apparently they didn't remember the events of April 15th, 1865).
The guy in charge of the Secret Service kinda just kept doing it anyway, and by the time the politicians finally realized having a protective detail for the Executive was a good idea after President Mckinley was assassinated, they figured if the Secret Service had been doing it so far, they might as well keep doing it. So they've been doing it full-time since 1901 because no one thought to hand the task to another agency like the US Marshals.
