thinking of pulling the trigger on a camaro..

Alright, I currently have it on a two day test drive. It is a 2010 camaro 2ss manual, 65k miles for 20k. Now for the good: It drives really smooth, clutch feels great, sounds really good. Exterior is super clean for being a 2010, not even any swirlies from the automatic car wash. No rust anywhere. Its had 3 previous owners, but each only drove it around 4-5k miles a year. Brought it to a mechanic that did a one hour PPI on it, said the car was perfect, save for a chip on the mirror, and that whoever previously owned it had taken really good care of it. Now for the bad: its had a muffler and res delete. I like loud, but not THAT loud. Its currently obnoxious, and if i went through id buy an exhaust for it, for around 1.5k including installation. What do we think? is this a good buy, especially with tariffs coming up

Talk me out of doing something stupid please

Upvotes

Hello! I am a 24F with massive driving anxiety. My first car at 16 was a glorious 2008 triple white vw beetle. I loved that little thing, I felt super safe and in control driving it, it parked like a dream, and got fabulous mileage.

The only downside is that we bought it from a shady dealer knowing nothing about cars and basically from winter 2017 to January of 2024 I was constantly in the shop pouring more money into the little gal than I bought her for in the first place. Eventually I said enough’s enough, popped her on FB marketplace for like $1500, someone scooped her up and limped her to her new home in the next city over and that was that. I cried like a baby.

After a good inspection from my mechanic, I bought a sensible 2015 Honda Civic, rebuilt title, sold by a dude whose father in law is a Honda mechanic, and got on my way.

But I hate it. My civic is huge, it feels like driving a boat down the highway. As soon as the tiniest gust of wind comes, I feel like I’m blowing all over the road. My bubbly little beetle could dart through 50mph gusts without so much as a jolt. I can hardly see over the double stacked dash/hood even with my seat jacked all the way up. Parking is terrifying even with the backup cam. My friend’s fiancé dropped her off the emergency jack while trying to change my tire and bent the frame a bit, causing her to pull to the right some. My mechanic says it’s fine, and I believe him, but my anxiety notices that tug every time I go out and it scares the piss out of me :(

I learned a lot about cars during my time with my beetle and during the process of buying my civic. I know now to get a pre purchase inspection, I have a great local mechanic that I trust and that treats me very well. But at the end of the day, I’m still a student (grad school) and I don’t have a ton of extra money for throwing at a fussy car.

Please, please talk me out of selling the civic and buying another beetle (but this time a post-2010 model, not as cute but evidently more reliable). I miss not being terrified every time I’m behind the wheel, but I know I’m likely to end up right back in the shop practically every month if I actually do this :(

Too many miles?

Just moved out of NYC after 8 years and now searching for a car, and would like something fun but also a little practical since I‘ll still be doing a decent amount of city/stop and go driving in Charlotte, NC.

Originally wanted a BRZ/GR86, but with low inventory/high prices I am leaning more towards hot hatch territory for the practicality. Also drove a Hyundai Elantra GT in college and loved it, so the Veloster N has been a top contender on my list.

Wondering if 82K miles is a red flag? I always read on here that the Hyundai engines die after 100k lol. Thanks in advance!

Why is this Mazda CX-9 cheaper than others like it?

Hi guys, I just upgraded from a 2003 e class and I’ve been looking for my next car. for the past few weeks, I have really been debating which car I should buy out of the two. Normally people would say buy what you want, but I genuinely love these 2 cars, as they are within my price range. But I honestly don’t know which car to go for… any help? I plan to keep the car for a few years

Hyundai Santa Cruz or Ford Maverick?

So we have been a one household for my wife and i's entire marriage of almost 6 years. We have four kids so our vehicle is a big full size SUV. But now we're in a place where we can actually afford a second vehicle and I'm not a big fan of how the full size SUV drive so I don't really want a truck but I do think having a bed would be nice That's why I like about the Santa Cruz because it's kind of a ute and I like that. But everyone raves about the Mavericks I was curious what everyone's opinion was. I can afford the top trim level and either vehicle so that's not the issue of cost I do care about value though so there's that. Thanks.

First time buying a car and need one without any savings…what do I do?

I (22f) am about to start my first full-time job in May, and will be moving across states. All my savings right now will go towards that move before I get my relocation bonus. The problem is I have no car and no experience with buying one and I have nothing for a down payment. There is no free transportation there, ubering or renting will be ridiculously expensive so the only cost efficient option will be to buy a used reliable car.

How do I even go about getting a car? Should I finance through the dealership, get a car loan or a personal loan? Should I Lease? Is it possible with $0 down? Which will get me the best possible APR? how do I avoid getting stuck with a lemon? For extra context, my credit score right now is 688, I have no money at all (for a car) this month and would only be able to start making payments at the end of May if I do end up getting one, when I get my first paycheck, I’m feeling overwhelmed and would appreciate any advice or things I should do. Thank you so much!

The car market right now

I’ve been hearing people say that the car market is about to get really bad because of the tariffs, and that right now is the lowest it’s going to be. I’m 19 and only have $3,000. I own a 2008 Mitsubishi Galant with 150k miles, but if this is the lowest the market will be, what happens if my car breaks down? Like, am I cooked? Should I take out a loan and try to get a car now? Or should I ride out my Mitsubishi and hope that in 2–3 years the car market cools down? I’ve heard it’s pretty much confirmed that prices are going to rise over the next few months or years.

2025 Camry vs CR-V

I know the standard debate is between the RAV and CR-V but I did not like the RAV on the test drive. My previous two cars have been Camry so it’s like home for me but I’m debating upsizing. I have one child in a rear facing car seat with the potential for more but that’s not very likely at this time. Whatever I plan to buy I’d be in for 10+ years. I’ve also seen the Mazda line recommended but am not familiar with them at all and there are no local dealerships.

Tarifa and dealerships

Visited a few dealerships yesterday — got a mix of sales tactics around the new tariffs. Curious what others are seeing.

My wife and I stopped by a few dealerships to start seriously looking at cars. The sales experiences varied a lot — some reps were really pushing urgency around potential price hikes due to tariffs, almost using it as a scare tactic to close a deal that day.

Others took a more measured approach. They acknowledged the tariff situation, but suggested any pricing changes might not hit until May, so no pressure.

The most aggressive pitch came from a Subaru dealership. The original salesperson leaned hard into the tariff fear angle, even mentioned they had just gotten an internal email that morning about potential price hikes. When I pushed back and asked for specifics, I ended up talking to the sales manager. He admitted the tariffs weren’t active yet and couldn’t tell me what percentage of the vehicle’s major components were sourced overseas. That said, I do respect that he didn’t try to BS me — though let’s be honest, that might’ve only happened because I called out the earlier sales pitch right there in the showroom.

It got me thinking: What’s your take on these tariff concerns? Are they legit in the short term — or mostly sales leverage right now? Also, do you think we’ll see more transparency from dealers on things like parts origin and country of final assembly?

Would love to hear how others are navigating this or what you’re seeing at your local dealers.

Well, what car should I buy? Is this a good deal?

I've been in the market for a car for at least a year now. Previously I had a family member's old 2011 dodge avenger that was given to me as a graduation gift. It lasted a bit, but about a year ago the transmission went and it would cost more to fix than the car is worth and it has a few other issues so I'm sure even if I did use 2~4k of my savings to fix it, it'll only run for a few months longer.

I found a CPO certified, Previously a rental, 2022 Toyota corolla LE in my area. It has less than 70k miles on it, and it's priced at almost 19k. It also has a pretty good warranty. They said if I bring my W2, they think they can get my approved for 10% financing with only 5k down. This is the best deal I've gotten so far. (Again I've been looking for a car for about a year, I'm a first time buyer, 22yrs old, and have been working my first job for about a year making only 50k yearly gross in an expensive state) other deals put me at 15%-22%. I have not been able to get pre-approval due to lack of credit. I'm working on that now. Most of my income goes to my mom, groceries, and savings, so I never really thought to get a credit card till a few months ago. I saved for whatever I wanted rather than risk debt.

I originally planned to use this year without a car to save 15k and buy something used with whatever that got me, or with minimal financing. But older adults insisted that was too much and even as a first time buyer I should be okay with as little as 3k down. (Bad Intel, ik now but it's too late) I already irresponsibly used a lot of that savings on gifts for my younger siblings to try and give them a nice Christmas last year and helping out older family in bad financial situations.

With that financial background out the way- now the point of this post- should I buy the car now? Or wait to save up and find something more ideal. I could handle the insurance and car note, but it wouldn't be comfortable at all. And would significantly eat into my saving habits. I'm worried that I got so used to saving about 1200 a month to eventually move out that spending most of that (283-350 note, 300+ insurance,~125+ gas) that if I get this car I'll be completely fucked and never be able to move out in this worsening economy.

Is this a good enough deal? Should I find something cheaper that I can also expect to last me about 10 years? If so, what?

A friend recommended reddit (he comes to you guys and tiktok for everything holy) so I'd really appreciate some guidance.

Previous cars I've seriously considered where Honda accords/civics, Nissan altimas/sentras, Subaru forester/impremza, and Toyota camrys/rav4 if that helps. Just something to last with just a bit of routine maintenance, good to decent mpg, spacey, and reliable asl. Thanks for any help you can offer.

How much do you avoid "problem cars"?

Upvotes

I'm looking for a used convertible and I'm starting to feel a bit paranoid.

Mercedes SLK seems great, but many I find in my price bracket has the M272 with balance shaft issues.

Then you've got your Audi's, with the 2.0 TFSI that has oil and cam chain issues.

MGF has strange and expensive shocks.

Mustang V8 has thermostat issues.

Boxster has the IMS bearing.

It feels like whatever car I look into they all have some fatal flaw that could get super expensive... How do you handle that?

Just keep looking for the perfect car or risk it and just buy whatever you want?

parent of 2 in NYC, buying my first car ever -- help!

Upvotes

survived without a car my whole adult life. but now we have a 2nd kid (a newborn!) + a dog, and all of our family is driving distance... it's time to buy a car. also hoping to get ahead of major price increases due to trump's tariffs (though i know we're already a little late for that).

considerations:

- used only

- will drive ~1x per week most weeks. several longer trips (100 - 400 miles RT) per year to see family etc.

- we make good salaries so dont have a super strict budget, but a) we're frugal and b) we'd like to keep insurance costs as low as possible. so thinking $25k max.

- will be street parking / parallel parking, so dont want anything too large

- that said, we also have 2 kids in carseats and a dog, and when we see family we have a lot of stuff, so we need room. leaning toward a convertible 3-row SUV (e.g. highlander) over a compact 2-row SUV. but not sure.

here are options so far -- would love feedback. TIA!

- toyota highlander

- acura MDX

- subaru forester

- toyota rav4

What is the best year for a Volvo XC60 or BMW X3. $35k max.

Upvotes

I am very much in the market for a daily driver. I'm quite open but I am looking for a luxury daily driver at the moment. My main focus has been in a 2018 Porsche Macan S, however I'm trying to cast a somewhat wider net into the BMW X3 market and Volvo XC60. Also very open to sedans. What is the best year for the subject vehicles? I'm also open to sedan and best year suggestions as well as that is what I'm used to.

Buying a New vs Lightly Used Now | Civic Hatch or CX-5

Upvotes

I’ve been searching for my first car ever over the last 10 months, and honestly—it’s been rough. I’m struggling to pull the trigger, mainly because I’m scared of the financial commitment and the long-term aspect of it. This would be my first major purchase, and that alone is pretty overwhelming.

I’ve considered going for something much cheaper, but I do want to enjoy driving. At the same time, I’m a complete beginner behind the wheel, so safety features are a must for me.

I plan to keep whatever I buy for a long time, which is why I want to make the right choice—but my indecisiveness is driving me nuts at this point.

What's the best "everyday life" car ?

Let's pretend that i have unlimited budget, i'm not a big fan so i'm not interested by sports car or showing off. What i want is a comfortable and reliable car, with a lot of space, and preferably not ugly.
I'll add a rule : no Rolls or Bentley.

What would you suggest ?

Two year old car to keep for years or twelve year old car to replace in 12 months. Is either more sensible?

Upvotes

I would really like a Volvo V50, but as they’re no longer made my choice is to buy an old one or a V60 (which I also really like). Which makes most financial sense; a new(ish) V60 at approx £17K, or a series of much older cars at approx £2K to keep for a year until they need an MOT?

Used EV $40k or under

Upvotes

Looking to buy a new car ASAP. I hate driving, hate spending money on cars. Will drive a car into the ground before I replace it so I’m not worried about the value of the car going down.

This car will eventually be my daughter’s car, thus why I’d prefer used and the closer to $30k the better. At the average rate of depreciation for EVs by the time she’s ready to drive the car will be worth about what I would be willing to spend on a car for a teenager.

Car will be paid for in cash unless the dealer offers a discount for financing with them and 0% down with no prepayment penalty.

Things I want: - An EV - not a hybrid and no Teslas. This isn’t even political, I just think they’re loud and bumpy and poorly made. You can’t change my mind, im sorry. - 2022 or newer - At least 200 miles per charge - Able to charge to a full battery within 8 hrs with an L2 home charger - Is reliable (don’t want to spend a ton on repairs needlessly) - Is safe (this is VERY important to me) - would like something that feels bigger on the interior but isn’t gigantic. My preteen is wanting to hang out with her friends more and more every day. A car that will comfortable seat three 9-12 year olds in the back would be wonderful. - a heads up display would be nice but isn’t mandatory. I rented a Wagoneer recently that had the heads up display and loved it, but it’s just a bonus. - Heated rear seats would also be nice but not mandatory - I don’t LOVE the giant screens in most EVs, I know this is unavoidable and everyone else loves it but I think they look goofy. I also really hate having 8 million screens I need to flip through to change the temp of the car or open a glove box etc. this isn’t a deal breaker, I guess I’m just old fashioned and like buttons. - something that’s quiet on the road would be GREAT. - I could not care less about how quickly a car can go from zero to 60. I don’t haul anything besides kids. I WFH most days and only commute one to two days a week about 15 min. I don’t need a powerful car.

I don’t care about the tech in the car unless it directly impacts reliability or the amount of miles I’ll get per charge. I will not use any self driving functions, I have never even trusted cruise control. I don’t use my own cars when I roadtrip so I don’t care if I can’t make it cross country in the car.

My current front runners are:

  • Volvo C40 Recharge - is a compact SUV but looks like it has a small back seat from the photos online. I’m very worried about the size of this car.
  • Polestar 2 - same as above. Just worried about cabin space. This is currently my front runner since their CPO program is pretty generous. And it has GREAT reviews.
  • Cadillac Lyric - has mixed reviews online but looks like a nice size. Don’t love the idea of passing on a full size SUV to a teenager. I’ve worked in insurance long enough to know how dangerous it is for other drivers on the road to have a teenager behind a big car.

Open to other cars except Teslas, the Iconic line, and Subarus EV (cause it’s tiny), and anything made by Ford. Would really like this car to last until my daughter is out of undergrad with as few costly repairs as possible. So, should last roughly 11/12 years past the time I buy it.

Trading in my 2021 Corolla not sure used or new

Upvotes

I’m trading in my Corolla with 25k miles for something a bit larger but I don’t want to go up higher than $30k. In my area the Kona, Evista and Taos hit that mark with the base or mid trim any higher and you’re looking at about 32-35k out the door.

I was shopping around and test drove a new Mazda 30x that would end up being about 30k and a used cpo 2022 CX-5 with 44k miles premium edition for 25k

I ended up really liking the CX-5 due to the larger size and comfort/quality but I’m not sure about buying used when for 5k more I could get new. However the new cars I’m looking at in my price range don’t offer as much unless I go up to the top of the line models.

Anyone ever been in a similar situation? I feel like I would definitely get the extended warranty for peace of mind if I did buy used.
