Is an Alfa Romeo Giulia QV a douchey car for a 26M to drive?

Saved up cash for it, love it because it’s a real “drivers car”, and I think it looks absolutely stunningly beautiful. I’ll be honest, I’m worried about being perceived as a douche driving this around. My friends are mostly not in a financial position to afford something like this and I’m afraid it’ll alien people. Tbf it’s not an M3 and I’m in LA so there’s way younger people driving way douchier cars. Would love your insight.

Hooray! A Toyota!

I'm not really looking for advice, just want to share my happy news. I've been driving beaters my whole life, but I'm finally springing for something nice. Tomorrow I'll be signing on a 2021 Toyota RAV4 (XLE Premium Sport), 47k miles-- for $20,000. She has a bit of hail damage, but it doesn't bother me! I'm pumped and ready to run it another 150,000+ miles.

How much do you avoid "problem cars"?

I'm looking for a used convertible and I'm starting to feel a bit paranoid.

Mercedes SLK seems great, but many I find in my price bracket has the M272 with balance shaft issues.

Then you've got your Audi's, with the 2.0 TFSI that has oil and cam chain issues.

MGF has strange and expensive shocks.

Mustang V8 has thermostat issues.

Boxster has the IMS bearing.

It feels like whatever car I look into they all have some fatal flaw that could get super expensive... How do you handle that?

Just keep looking for the perfect car or risk it and just buy whatever you want?

I’ll admit Econ isn’t my area of expertise. Help w/ car decision.

Upvotes

I need to buy a car. I’ve seen many say the used car market isn’t influenced by tariffs. Obviously they’re not gonna put tariffs on used cars.

I’m just wondering, if tariffs increase new car prices, and nobody wants to buy (new) right now, won’t that mean there will be less used cars to buy, since people will be trading them in for new cars? And wouldn’t the used price go up then?

I totaled my car, and I am frozen on if I should replace it now or wait and see. I planned to buy a base model car new around 30-35,000$, or buy a cheaper 1-2 year old car with low miles.

I realize this might be a strange question for this sub, but I need help with car buying, just for a different reason than usual. I don’t want to make a several thousand dollar mistake.

And for those that want to call me ignorant for not understanding the tariff situation very well, that’s ok. I’m a big girl, you can call me whatever makes you feel better.

Thanks in advance!

Is this a good time to buy a new car?

I’ve seen mixed opinions on whether the tariffs will have a significant impact on the car market, so I wanted to see if I could get some feedback based on my situation. I have very limited knowledge about cars or the car market.

I drive a 2011 Kia Soul that hasn’t had significant issues, but it has around 170,000 miles and has started to have issues over the past couple years. The engine light stays on and anytime I have had a diagnostics test I get mixed information on what needs to be fixed/how much it would cost. A few years ago I spent nearly $600 to get it fixed, only for the check engine light to turn back on a week later. Anytime I get an oil change the light turns off for a few days before it returns. I live in the Midwest and with the winter temperatures my car has sometimes had difficulty starting on the coldest days. The battery has also completely died multiple times in the winter, which has led to me having to replace the battery a twice over the past 4-5 years. It also does not do well in slick conditions. Additionally, my steering wheel continues to shake after multiple realignments.

My Kia was an upgrade from my first ever car, a 2004 ford explorer that broke down every other time I drove it. As such, I’ve never really had the opportunity to purchase a car that I want, as I bought both (without financial assistance) cars in my teens.

After this past winter, I decided I would get a new car before winter 2025 as I want something that is more dependable in winter conditions. I also want to get a car that I truly enjoy driving. With the tariffs possibly affecting the car market, would it be better for me to purchase a car sooner this year rather than later this year?

The car I’m considering is a 2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid AWD.

Any opinions or suggestions are welcome as I truly don’t know much about cars and don’t have anyone in my life who is knowledgeable about cars. Thank you!

Im currently dailying an auto toyota celica, but I want to learn manual and figure it might be better to get a small beater for the first few months while I get used to manual before I start to save up and get a more expensive vehicle and risk shredding the transmission. Any suggestions? Ide want something a bit unique, so ide prefer no civics/corollas/etc. Im currently looking for miatas but im still unable to find any below $5k USD

thinking of pulling the trigger on a camaro..

Alright, I currently have it on a two day test drive. It is a 2010 camaro 2ss manual, 65k miles for 20k. Now for the good: It drives really smooth, clutch feels great, sounds really good. Exterior is super clean for being a 2010, not even any swirlies from the automatic car wash. No rust anywhere. Its had 3 previous owners, but each only drove it around 4-5k miles a year. Brought it to a mechanic that did a one hour PPI on it, said the car was perfect, save for a chip on the mirror, and that whoever previously owned it had taken really good care of it. Now for the bad: its had a muffler and res delete. I like loud, but not THAT loud. Its currently obnoxious, and if i went through id buy an exhaust for it, for around 1.5k including installation. What do we think? is this a good buy, especially with tariffs coming up

Talk me out of doing something stupid please

Hello! I am a 24F with massive driving anxiety. My first car at 16 was a glorious 2008 triple white vw beetle. I loved that little thing, I felt super safe and in control driving it, it parked like a dream, and got fabulous mileage.

The only downside is that we bought it from a shady dealer knowing nothing about cars and basically from winter 2017 to January of 2024 I was constantly in the shop pouring more money into the little gal than I bought her for in the first place. Eventually I said enough’s enough, popped her on FB marketplace for like $1500, someone scooped her up and limped her to her new home in the next city over and that was that. I cried like a baby.

After a good inspection from my mechanic, I bought a sensible 2015 Honda Civic, rebuilt title, sold by a dude whose father in law is a Honda mechanic, and got on my way.

But I hate it. My civic is huge, it feels like driving a boat down the highway. As soon as the tiniest gust of wind comes, I feel like I’m blowing all over the road. My bubbly little beetle could dart through 50mph gusts without so much as a jolt. I can hardly see over the double stacked dash/hood even with my seat jacked all the way up. Parking is terrifying even with the backup cam. My friend’s fiancé dropped her off the emergency jack while trying to change my tire and bent the frame a bit, causing her to pull to the right some. My mechanic says it’s fine, and I believe him, but my anxiety notices that tug every time I go out and it scares the piss out of me :(

I learned a lot about cars during my time with my beetle and during the process of buying my civic. I know now to get a pre purchase inspection, I have a great local mechanic that I trust and that treats me very well. But at the end of the day, I’m still a student (grad school) and I don’t have a ton of extra money for throwing at a fussy car.

Please, please talk me out of selling the civic and buying another beetle (but this time a post-2010 model, not as cute but evidently more reliable). I miss not being terrified every time I’m behind the wheel, but I know I’m likely to end up right back in the shop practically every month if I actually do this :(

Edit: thanks for all the advice guys! It’s not what I wanted to hear, but it’s definitely what I needed to hear🥲 I guess me and Jessica Messica the Honda Civic will stick it out together for a while longer.

Nice fun car to daily and commute?

Upvotes

I wanna do some research before I get a job so when I get the job I’ll be ready to buy a car, but I’m thinking of buying a car in cash so I don’t have monthly payments eating my paycheck, I have a good amount of money saved up, not really sure how much to spend on a car, maybe like 10-20k, I know I can get a really cheap car but If I’m gonna be driving it I at least want to drive something nice, I’m thinking a c class or 3 series, I know maintenance is more for German cars but I don’t plan on keeping the car for too long, maybe a year or two max, then I plan on selling it and getting a good amount of the money back, any advice or recommendations?

What car should I buy

Upvotes

My name is given, i am 20 year of age and live in Canada. I’m looking to get my first car. Willing to spend 15k with 1,500 down. I want a car that’s going to get me from point A to point B and something that’s going to last me a long, long time. I’m just afraid because I keep hearing people getting into a car then wanting to sell it one year later and ending up in negative equity. I just want to be safe for when I decide it’s time for an upgrade.

best reliable commuter

I'm going off to college and need something that will not give me any problems in the next 4 years since i'm gonna be broke i only want to spend money on basic maintenance if possible. As long as it's good on gas i'm ok with it and not a prius i genuinely don't want a Prius but everything else is on the table

my budget is 10k but i would like to spend around 8.5k on the car. Does anyone have suggestions on what to buy? i originally was looking at 2020 hyundai Elantras because of how good on gas it was but keep hearing people saying there trans blew around 80k and with my budget i can't buy new so all the ones id be able to buy would be high miles.

please let me know what you guys think i should buy and around how many miles i should be looking at when buying it let me know if you have any more questions to help me

Genesis Coupe 3.8, Nissan 350z, or '03-'04 Mach 1?

I have a built 2004 Cobra that is a freak of nature for a street car (over 900 rwhp). I do not drive the car as much due to the crappy weather conditions on the northern east coast and for the winter. I love the car but I don't drive it as much as I have. But it's my fun car. My daily right now is a blob eye WRX STI rally blue with gold BBS wheels. I just had it recently repained and ceramic coated. It looks incredible. The motor has about 60k miles on it while the body has 160k miles. It's in great condition and is on a very conservative tune since I drive it daily. The engine is built for 400 whp but it's pushing 318 on the wheels.

But now the more I baby the Subaru the more I want to keep it and just want to get another car where I won't baby it as much and having it more as my daily driver. I was thinking of buying a Genesis Coupe 3.8, 350z, or those older Mach 1's as a daily. Is this a bad idea and will I baby these cars even more? I just can't see myself buying a boring daily. I still want to have a smile on my face driving it.

So what would everyone here suggest? Thank you.

Too many miles?

Just moved out of NYC after 8 years and now searching for a car, and would like something fun but also a little practical since I‘ll still be doing a decent amount of city/stop and go driving in Charlotte, NC.

Originally wanted a BRZ/GR86, but with low inventory/high prices I am leaning more towards hot hatch territory for the practicality. Also drove a Hyundai Elantra GT in college and loved it, so the Veloster N has been a top contender on my list.

Wondering if 82K miles is a red flag? I always read on here that the Hyundai engines die after 100k lol. Thanks in advance!

Camry or Elantra

Considering a 2024 pre-owned Toyota gold certified Camry xle with 40k miles or 2024 Hyundai Elantra hybrid limited with 5K miles. Price difference is $200.

I need a beater that can drive me across PA every week. I will be putting at least 1K miles a week. Other considerations are comfort. I’m old and sitting hurts.

How many miles is too many?

Im in the market for a little daily to learn on, budget is 3-4k so most things have almost 200k if not more. I've seen some people say anything over 175k isn't even worth buying, but I've heard people say the 200ks are fine. I'm just a little confused on what constitutes something being a gamble and a solid deal. I know it's depends on the car, but what would you guys consider too many to consider buying it?
