Support Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion Dream StandBy Dashboard – Anyone Made Something Like This?

Hey all,

I’ve totally fallen in love with the new iPhone StandBy mode and have this dream of turning it into a kind of smart dashboard - something that gives me everything I need at a glance without clutter.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time browsing for setups, but everything I’ve found so far either includes info I don’t care about or misses the stuff I actually need. I’ve played around with tools like Widgy and Widgetsmith, but despite their flexibility, I quickly realized I’m a bit out of my depth design-wise.

So instead, I made a mock-up of what my ideal dashboard would look like. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s tried building something similar - or if you have tips for how to actually make this real.

Here’s what I’d want it to include:

  1. Large clock and date - Ideally with current weather and active alarms included
  2. Activity tracker - Focus on steps, but cool if it shows other health data too
  3. Audio controls - Quick access to music or audiobooks
  4. Battery status - Ideally all connected devices at a glance (iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, etc.)
  5. Detailed agenda/calendar view - Needs to show more than just 2-3 events, ideally scrollable to fit a full day’s schedule
  6. Notification overview incl. lin to key work apps - Something that shows at a glance if I’ve got unread messages or pings in Slack/Teams/etc.

In my mock-up, I’ve grouped items 1-4 on the left and 5-6 on the right, to keep lots of room open for the calendar view.

Anyone managed to build something like this? Or have ideas on how to bring it to life? Would love to collaborate or hear what’s worked for others!

Discussion Canadian iOS 18.4 users amber alerts notification toggle

Post image

It seems like the option was never there before for Canadian users, now it seems we can disable AMBER alerts and make them silent since iOS 18.4.

It’s also possible I recently had an American eSIM and the options showed up because of this.

Discussion Why is settings search so terrible?

Am I doing something wrong? The settings search is beyond terrible. Doesn't bring up the stuff you look for, gives you weird seemingly irrelevant options instead very often.

Support Wallpaper Turning Black after reboot

Thumbnail

I hope someone can help with some strangeness I have going on here. Plenty of screenshots provided to try and explain the issue..

iPhone SE3, running 17.6.

If I reboot the phone, my usual wallpaper is there when it reboots (picture 1), but as soon as I use an app - any app - and exit the app, it vanishes and is replaced by plain black (picture 2). It does it every time, and it is also the same on the lock screen (picture 3).

If I go into the customize page, it’s black again (picture 4) but as soon as I hit ‘customize current wallpaper’, it brings it up (picture 5). But, when I exit that without making any changes it’s black again. Same happens if I go into ‘wallpaper’ in settings (picture 6).

I haven’t made any updates or anything, I just restarted it, and it started doing it from then.

I also can’t find the image I had set as the wallpaper in my photos now either…I’ve had that wallpaper for years and years so I have no idea where it’s saved or the date, or if it’s vanished from the phone.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Discussion iOS 18.4 fixed 1% volume – it’s now quieter

Just updated to iOS 18.4 on iPhone 16 and noticed something great – setting volume to 1% via shortcut is finally much quieter. Watching videos at night is so much better now. Anyone else noticed this?

Note: I never had this issue on iPhone 12, but on my iPhone 16 it was too loud until now.

Discussion Dynamic Island: iOS 18.3.1 is a mess

Post image

Is it acceptable that the software render of the Dynamic Island often ends up leaving the designated location within the physical screen?

Not only that, but the notification area too is collapsed to the top of the screen.

Is this just iOS being buggy or does my device have an actual defect I should attempt to troubleshoot or get fixed?

Support YouTube audio continues after turning phone off

Upvotes

How do I make it so YouTube actually turns off with my phone? I like using Picture in Picture, and music apps should keep playing, but when I turn my phone off, I would like the video to stop. It’s super inconsistent too and it’s very annoying when I’m trying to shut off the video quickly but instead it continues at the exact same volume and I have to open my phone back up to turn it off.

Support Is it possible to deactivate accessing the passwords via faceid

Hello, I am using FaceID with an IPhone XS and just unlocked my phone with a photo of my face. I'd like to unlock my phone with FaceID. I have every FaceID unlock except that turned off but it is still possible to access my passwords in the settings with FaceID. Is there any way to turn this off or is turning off faceid my only option? (Password autofill is off, that's not my problem)

Support iOS 18.4: search can’t find its own Apple Maps

It's just fantastic, they have fixed the most obvious search bugs, but that was apparently a very hot fix. Looks like all their QA is indeed busy with AI. Do I maybe need to somehow re-index it?

Support Search in App Library returns nothing?

Post image
Upvotes

iPhone 16 Pro, IOS18.4

Recently I’ve found that on occasions when I try to open an app by pulling down and searching, nothing is returned. Similarly, swiping over to the right and searching via the App Library does nothing. I have to scroll through the list and open the app that way.

I thought that this was possibly being caused by Focus settings. For example, when I plug in my iPad this triggers a Focus state using a Shortcut. The focus state is shared to other devices such as my IPhone. This may be the case but if so, I can’t figure out why. I’ve been using the shortcut for months and haven’t ever had the issue I’m currently experiencing.

I’ve restarted the device which seem to fix it temporarily but it returns. I can’t figure out what (other than possibly a Focus state) may be the cause.

Any thoughts or insights appreciated. TIA.

Support Is there a way of turning of the setting that automatically turns off your camera when you hide the PiP view?

When I am on call over Instagram or FaceTime and I am on another app, the video call window automatically goes into Picture in Picture mode (video call icon appears in small box in one of the corners). This is sometimes annoying but I’d like to keep my camera on while hiding the icon. Is there any way of achieving this automatically?

PSA Type to Siri: GPT: Ask a direct question to ChatGPT

Upvotes

I wanted to ask ChatGPT a question, but wanted to see if I can do it straight from Siri and it’d be smart enough to ask ChatGPT - spoiler alert; it wasn’t.

On a whim, I tried to ask the same question but preceded by GPT: and it actually worked. It went straight to ChatGPT with a new conversation. Honestly not sure how many people already knew this. Or maybe it’s just faster to open ChatGPT directly.
