The LepreCon?

Not to be confused with the LeperCon. That’ll get awkward.

There's something funny about this comment, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Actually almost sent my original comment misspelled that way but fortunately noticed it in time. I don't imagine a LeperCon would be fun to attend.

Anyone who read the Artemis Fowl books would know it's LEPRecon, for Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance unit. I recall a bit in one of the books where the fairy Holly, a lead character and an officer in LEPRecon, is glad that her standard uniform no longer includes those ridiculous big buckles and funny hats.

It did. Unfortunately it wasn't faithful to the original novel. Relied on a Macguffin to resolve the plot. Sad.

I got a tattoo from an artist who met the leprechaun-spotter. I only know this because while I was getting tattooed, I noticed a photo on the wall of the tattoo artist and the dude from the news standing together and asked "holy shit, is that the 'everyone who seen the leprechaun say yeahuh!!' guy?" He confirmed it was the dude and he was pretty shocked I even noticed, also said the dudes goofy attitude seemed genuine and not just an act for the news
Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk

If you have boots like that, you're not going through TSA to fly.

Given the shrinking of legroom I assumed leprechauns would be content flying major airlines.

They do not.

Few year back a story dropped that some dealers had clocked on to this and so they started renting a private jet to import kilos of cocaine without risk using a smaller local airport. Had been happening years before anyone booked them. No checks at all so people, guns, drugs etc were all easy to move. Just had to pay the 150k hire fee per shipment.

It’s often used in football as a route a receiver can run, or it can mean to make a tight turn around a corner or through a doorway.

It's better but not gone. I have some permanent damage in my finger joints from it. I can still do most things. I'd need hand surgery to fix it.

u/ACertainNeighborino 4d ago
If you still have issues, I highly recommend seeing an Occupational Therapist. The common button hook handle is larger where you can use a gross grasp (whole fist) and is easier on the finger joints

No, no thank you.
I don't want to spend 15 minutes taking these things off. We invented buttons that can be done by hand for a reason.

I agree. But I have to say I hate boots with zippers. It saves time and for styles like knee highs i dont know if it is even possible to not have zippers. But I very much dislike zippers. My soul pair of boots’ only flaw is the zipper.

I remember watching Chicago Cubs baseball on WGN back in the 1980s. The pitcher made a fake pickoff move to first base before turning to try a pickoff at 3rd—as if the runner on 3rd would try to score when he saw the pitcher start to throw to 1st. It didn’t work—the runner on 3rd didn’t move. Harry Caray said, “That move went out of style with high-button shoes.” I never knew what he meant…until now, almost 40 years later. Thanks for posting!

My nana b:1912 was flabbergasted when I bought a pair of Doc Martin's when I was 18. She was like whyyyyy. All they had growing up was boots halfway up the leg that required buttoning up which was tedious as hell I'm picking. Even though the Docs are obviously laces it must have given her flashbacks

I couldn’t get it off last night

I finally got it off an’ my girl-friend cry

Your stink foot puts a hurt on my nose!
Stink foot! Stink foot! I ain’t lyin’
Can you rinse it off, d’you suppose?”

In my head canon: Buttons and buttonholes were the standard for shoes, and it took everybody forever to get everything all cinched up and proper before they went out into society.
And then decades later, some person said, "Why the fuck are we spending half our life cinching up our goddamned shoes, and can't we do it quicker?" And then someone got the local newspaper to print a Ye Olde Lyfe Hackke that suggested using a curled wire or paperclip or something to get in there and do it faster. But then people found that the wire or paperclip was too flimsy, and then someone decided to engineer a quality tool for the job, with sturdy metal and a proper handle! And here we are today wondering why the fuck nobody pitched laces, buckles or slip-ons.

u/AliasNefertiti 5d ago
My guess is crochet hooks were involved at some point. As a crocheter people are always confusing button hooks with crochet hooks.

Great demonstration of why zippers were invented.
Imagine traveling with those and then realizing you left your special tool behind. The opposite of satisfying.
Or if you had to go in and out of an Asian household. My wife is Asian, and yes, we don't wear shoes indoors. That's why I love Crocs. Slip them on to go outside, slip them off to come inside.
