Rant the lack of empathy in this subreddit is crazy

not trying to target anyone with this post. this is just an observation...

whenever someone has anything below a 4.0 GPA and perfect attendance and posts about it to this subreddit, there's so little empathy? "just go to class" or "just study" literally is the most horrible, nothing advice i've ever heard. don't you think that if they could be the perfect student, they would?

as a teenager, there can be SO many things going on during high school years that make it hard to actually do school, and i wish more people in this subreddit would at least TRY to understand that.

Rant This is gonna sound ridiculous but I have to say it.

Everyone says all freshmen are annoying. There are some that are annoying I feel like they’re not as bad as people say. Like I was in my math class and these 2 freshmen’s were acting like idiots. But all the other freshmen’s in class were looking at those freshmen’s like they were crazy. Like you wouldn’t call out another grade if they were being annoying. No one’s gonna say those juniors are so annoying. You know what im saying?😭

General Advice Needed/Given I have no friends in my own grade. Should I make up an excuse to skip my mandatory senior events at the end of the school year?

Upvotes

I haven’t made that many friends in high school over the last few years. I’ve attended a few events, tried to get involved by joining clubs, but it was never really my thing. Unfortunately, I have 2 required senior events that I need to attend in order to get my cap & gown for the graduation ceremony. I am unable to skip graduation since my family is going out of state to visit and attend the ceremony, but ideally I’d like to skip the 3-5 hour long events which are 2 days prior to the ceremony.

I’ve emailed administration and was told that if I missed the events I would be marked absent from school and they would call my parents. I’d still be able to get my cap & gown plus graduation tickets on the day of the event (early in the morning during graduation practice) but it’ll be risky for me since I’ll have to come up with an excuse and call the school twice so that my parents don’t get notified of me skipping. Unfortunately, my parents are very big on social events and would definitely be angry with me if I tried skipping an event which is considered mandatory for me to attend. At first I considered going because I thought I’d be able to roam around campus and see my underclassmen friends but unfortunately I’m not allowed to enter campus during the event and have to stay in the lower field.

I’m not entirely sure what I should do in this situation. I’ll be moving in about 2 months from now and will be living 30 minutes away from school but my family will likely done moving a week before the final week of my senior year, so I probably can’t use that as an excuse. I’m thinking of just going and maybe attempting to strike up conversations with acquaintances but I feel like it would be extremely awkward doing so, and I’d much rather skip. Does anyone have advice on what I should do? Should I just suck it up for 3-4 hours 2 days in a row and deal with being judged for looking like a loner? Or should I spare myself the stress by skipping?

General Advice Needed/Given is it okay to third wheel at prom?

I'm a junior so this is my first prom. it's in a week and my friend i was going to go with got asked out tonight. she's pretty much my only friend, bit i encouraged her to say yes because I really just want her to be happy, i love her so much I can't put it into words. she still wants me to go with her and her date, and the date said it's fine if I go with them since I already had plans with friend. I really want to go to prom bc I have severe fomo, but at this point I just want to return my dress and not go. I'm just sick of ts. I know the third wheeling will be awkward, but I can't get a date. idk what to do.

General Advice Needed/Given Medicine Related Summer Internships/Programs for Juniors

Hi everyone! I'm a junior and looking for a medicine-related internship or program that would be good for me to do over the summer. I know it is a bit late in the year to start applying but I’d really appreciate any recommendations for programs that might still be open. I have a 4.1 weighted and live in the DMV area if that does any good. I'm available the entirety of summer and am open to in person (in the DMV area) or virtual. If not, any advice on my situation would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Question How are American Highschools like?

For some context, I have gone to school in a different country for practically my entire life. Recently, I've moved to Texas and plan to soon attend highschool as a freshman here. I'm curious as to what the highschool experience generally is in America, and what I would experience as an extremely short 15 year old from a different country. I have quite good grades (97+ in all subjects except Gym at my old school) and am antisocial, so I was wondering if I can get through the schools here relatively easily.

Question Asking Teachers about Marking Work

Upvotes

Hello! I'm new to high school and I asked my teacher for my friend when I would get my assessment back. All she said was "You'll get it back when it's marked." I said thanks and was going to move on with my life and she said "you know it's rude to ask a teacher when you're going to get an assessment or test back" which made 0 sense to me. Why? Because this lady legit told this other kid in my class when he asked for another test back she said you'll get it back maybe next week or the week after. I've also had 0 problems with any other teachers. I just want to know if this is normal, it probably is but this lady has had a problem with me since I came into school saying I had to walk to school because the bus broke down. And also I'm an exchange student so I'm not particularly smart in western culture

General Advice Needed/Given Should i embrace senioritis?

Upvotes

Should I even try anymore??

I scored a 1580 on the Sat and a 36 on the act w a 3.9 (uw) and 4.2 (w) gpa. My schools pretty competitive so I was only like 43/150 in my class ranking (i thought i had like NO chance because the standards at my school are extremely unrealistic!!). I got into several top 20 schools (still deciding, probably yale, UCberk, or nyu). I know I won't be valedictorian (she has a 5.0 gpa, i'm not even going to catch up).

I only had to do like two years of math because I scored high on the high school placement test and entered my freshman year with algebra2/trig and precalculus (algebra2/trig is one class and one semester is a year of math) and the same case w english. the only classes i'm doing right now is apush, my senior capstone, honor philosophy (night class) and neuroscience. these classes are so easy. should I even try? like I want to keep a good work ethic for myself but I have literally NOTHING to do except for my non-profit zero-waste cooking class. that's literally it. my sports (cross country, soccer) are over so i don't need to be at school longer than i should (except for philosophy).

Should I just give up. Is there a point??

Question Should I skip my graduation?

My brothers wedding lands during the exact same time as my graduation and it’s going to be a ton of fun, he’s got this nice venue picked out on the beach and we get to stay there 3 days in advance for it so and so forth, however I’ve also heard that graduation is pretty important.. so which should I attend? Those who’ve graduated is it worth it?

Rant I can’t wait to graduate

I’m a junior right now and I’ll have met graduation requirements by the end of this year from doing online classes. I have the option to graduate a whole year early, but my mom won’t let me. She wants me to do all the senior stuff like prom and other things, but I really just want to get out of there and go to college. It’s not like I’m leaving them, because the college I’m going to is literally a 20min drive and I’ll be living at home while going. I just can’t wait to get out of here and move on with my life. I had fun times in high school, but I’m just done with it and will definitely look back at it as the worst few years of my life. At least I know I won’t have peaked in high school. I really like math so I’m just going to load my senior year up with only math classes.

Class Advice Needed/Given Know the differences!

AP (advanced placement) classes are college courses that are advanced and difficult you need to pass an exam with 3-5 for credit it can rigorous these credits are recognized nationwide and accepted

DE classes (dual enrollment) are college classes that are rigorous and taught my college professors rather than high school teachers you don't need to pass an exam for the credit just the class however the credit is only recognized state wide trying to transfer outside can be difficult

Honors: these are high school courses but harder they don't offer college credit and offer GPA boost

And finally

IB classes: This is a two-year program (typically for grades 11 and 12) that aims to develop students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. You can get a better high school diploma and college credit along with advanced placement in college.

These all help GPA pick what's best for you :)
