I know Avatar gets a lot of hate on reddit but I personally enjoy them for the designs and colors. It's one of those dumb fun movies to watch with pals.

522

u/GamingTatertot Steven Spielberg Enthusiast 19h ago

I don’t even think it’s dumb fun - I just think it’s simple. The stories aren’t trying to be too clever for their own good, they’re pretty straightforward, but they’re an insanely good time on the big screen.

Also the action is great IMO.

161

u/CordlessJet 19h ago

Neytiri spearing a soldier with an arrow then firing the arrow through them into another soldier was peak cinema

117

u/Few-Metal8010 19h ago

Yeah the violence in these films is underrated honestly, some awesome gruesome bonecracking maulings

The aerial armored-train robbery in Way of Water was a highlight for me.

45

u/DerelictInfinity 18h ago

The raid on the train and Jake going all Metal Gear Solid on the other avatars were honestly my favorite parts of the second movie lol

12

u/realbigbob 12h ago

The Tulkun smashing the humans to pieces and slicing people in half with a cable was some of the most satisfying violence I’ve ever seen

12

u/Worthyness 17h ago

Any time we get natives vs machines is a fun time. But this time, the natives also have nature as weapons

Yeah it gets a lot of crap for being a simple unoriginal story at its core but there are plenty of great movies that don't do anything revolutionary story-wise. I watch these movies for the spectacle, and it absolutely delivers on that front.

25

u/EvolvedApe693 18h ago

I feel movies can get away with a simple plot by compensating with spectacle. The Avatar movies definitely do that.

16

u/Dottsterisk 18h ago

John Wick, as well.

It’s a simple, well-worn plot that serves as a vehicle for the action choreography. And it’s a helluva ride.

13

u/SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS 16h ago

Avatar gets shit on for being the same as Pocohontas, Dances With Wolves, and Ferngully, but those movies don't get shit on for being each other.

2

u/KingMario05 7h ago

Yet the audience shows up every time. Why? Because James Cameron brings the spectacle none of the others do.

2

u/DisneyPandora 10h ago

Same with Tron

69

u/GrimmHellblazer 19h ago

I agree. The last big battle at the tail end of 2 is some of the best action Cameron has done since T2.

45

u/riegspsych325 The ⊃∪⊃⪽ 19h ago

plus, Cameron utilizes the IMAX 3D combo to its fullest potential and does it well. He really knows how to give people the most bang for their buck when it comes to the theatrical experience. It’s enough to get even the most non-casual moviegoers to show up in droves

24

u/spacemanspliff-42 18h ago

I missed seeing Avatar in theaters, but I saw Way of Water in 3D IMAX and I got why it was meant to be seen that way. When it showed everyone underwater for the first time the entire theater went "Whoa" together. Incredible experience.

14

u/riegspsych325 The ⊃∪⊃⪽ 18h ago

I’m sure they’ll re-release the movie before the third one comes out. Give it a shot if you can

4

u/TheShadyGuy 12h ago

If you can get a full imax it should be even better. Kicking myself for meeting a buddy in long Beach instead of going to the really good imax ast Howard Hughes for the first. Did see pacific rim there and it was absurdly awesome!

18

u/one_pint_down 16h ago

I know they're only superficially similar, but compare the final battle of Avatar 2 and Black Panther 2 and the difference in quality, pacing and storytelling... just about everything, is ridiculous.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/ClarkTwain 18h ago

It’s some of the best action anyone has done.

15

u/JamarcusRussel 13h ago

Cameron is actually just such a great director of four quadrant spectacle that people watch way of water without realizing how insane the story is. The bad guys clone themselves. There’s a talking whale. A lot of the movie is dedicated to tribal politics

4

u/KingMario05 7h ago

I can't wait for the Earth battle at the end of five.

Who cares if it's dumb. I NEED the Navi swarming on a militarized District of Columbia, lol.

9

u/CeruleanEidolon 14h ago

They're ridiculously elaborate VFX showcases draped over straightforward James Cameron action movies. What's not to love here?

28

u/-KFBR392 18h ago

James Cameron might be the greatest action director of all time. Those action scenes are incredible

14

u/Chewie83 17h ago

Newer technology aside, I thought the battle at the end of the first Avatar was better because it was actually tense and not just the humans getting massacred the entire time.

14

u/BEARWISHX 16h ago

The final showdown in the first one was so satisfying in many layers. The conversations, the arrow payoff, the big robot jumps off the big ship.

5

u/TigerTerrier 17h ago

I enjoy any epic tale or journey and the world building is wonderful

8

u/Goosojuice 18h ago

Exactly. Story is simple, execution is incredible.

4

u/bacon-squared 18h ago

These are the types of films when you watch them at home it does no justice. On the big screen they have a much bigger impact. The plot is simple but made for cinema.

2

u/laseluuu 17h ago

in VR 3D they are pretty jaw dropping. Also Valerian! Actually felt like a proper spiritual successor to fifth element and i dont get the hate at all at all (this is in 3D, i was awed)

They're great. I loved the second film. Beautiful movies, inspired by all elements but storytelling. Even the acting rises above the crop if you place scifi fantasy schlock as the standard.

I understand why they receive a lot of criticism but I'm not gonna be bashful about it.

I'm just excited to see more new creatures, love that whale from 2nd movie.

102

u/Draoken 19h ago

Same. I had never watched an intelligent whale beat the shit out of a battleship, but that's what I got and I'm excited for more.

Sometimes I just want epic adventure and these movies always deliver for me lol.

31

u/JxSnaKe 19h ago

I absolutely LOVE the spectacle of these movies.

15

u/NPRdude 16h ago

The ship itself was also a highlight for me. Only a tech nerd like Cameron would think to make a ground effect vehicle for hunting alien whales.

14

u/rugbyj 14h ago

The crabmechs sealed the deal. Inspired.

6

u/SPACEFUNK 19h ago

Battleship? It was a lightly armed whaling ship. An 18 inch shell would fuck up Tilkun's day.

11

u/Draoken 19h ago

you right, I spent like 10 seconds putting that post together.

10

u/SPACEFUNK 18h ago

It does bring up an interesting question. Like, how many sperm whales would it take to sink the U.S.S. Iowa?

7

u/jaime-the-lion 17h ago

Find out in this summer’s action-packed blockbuster, Moby Dick II: Revenge of Queequeg

3

u/Draoken 17h ago

If we have enough people asking this very specific question, I'm sure we could convince the Mythbusters to come back in like a decade.

Which is odd because a lot of tech in James Cameron movies is clearly anime inspired. Avatar literally has mechs lol

4

u/natfutsock 14h ago

Don't worry, if you look, people get just as annoying about Hero's Journey stories. Percy Jackson is greek mythology Harry Potter is British earth Star Wars is space Lord of the Rings is elven Greek mythology.

3

u/lsaz 17h ago

If you think about it, very few successful movies have had some sort of cultural impact in the last few years. I remember "Parasite" being a HUGE thing when it came out, but culturally, there's no footprint... no jokes, one-liners, scenes that are copied by other movies, references, or anything like that. It's kinda weird. And is the same with all Oscar-winning movies of the last 10 years.

15

u/CultureWarrior87 16h ago

It's because the cultural impact point is completely hollow. Not only is it untrue (billions grossed and starting a trend of 3D movies IS a cultural impact), but it's also pointless. When they say "cultural impact" they mean "it doesn't have a Star Wars level fanbase" but the reality is that that's not important. Fan base size isn't equate to quality. It's a complete non-argument people use because they think it makes them sound smart.

It’s funny to see how pervasive that is. People in this thread who feel positively about the first two films are having to justify it, despite the fact that the general public clearly enjoys them, as evidenced by the box office.

I enjoyed The Way of Water more than the first one so I am looking forward to seeing this one. Plus apparently not everything is gonna be so black and white finally so I can't wait to see what bad Navi can do.

68

u/LiquifiedSpam 18h ago

Way of water made the original feel like a tech demo

32

u/habdragon08 18h ago

I enjoyed Avatar 1 more because it more or less closed off all loose ends. Sure it left room for a sequel, but most of the plot points were entirely resolved. Avatar 2 ended halfway through a story. A story I was quite invested in.

And yea watching Avatar 2 after Avatar 1 you can tell the difference. But I watched Avatar 1 in 2009 and it made every other movie feel like a tech demo.

13

u/MaroonIsBestColor 16h ago

Avatar 2 is part of a planned list of movies filmed years ago that are being slowly released now. CGI takes a while to render I guess lol.

20

u/Lord_Halowind 18h ago

Those water effects are so insane. Can't wait to get a 4k TV to rewatch it!!

20

u/jetlightbeam 18h ago

I'd buy that TV sooner rather than later if I was you...

7

u/grease_monkey 16h ago

You mean you can't buy an American made Maytag 4k TV?

6

u/Lord_Halowind 18h ago

Yeah I know. I'll have extra money next month. Just need to wait a little longer.

5

u/seeyou_nextfall 16h ago

Be the change. 4K TVs are cheap as hell right now, but subject to change. To go Best Buy and buy a used 65inch Hisense U8 for under $400. Lotta bang for your buck.

3

u/Lord_Halowind 16h ago

I hope it has at least a 120 refresh rate. My 2011 Vizio has 120 and I'd hate to downgrade even though it's cheap and 4k. Thanks for the tip though!

3

u/Winter-Donut7621 15h ago

Make sure the new one is actually 120 hertz and not some of that bs terminology they use and put a 120 in front of it. It can be surprisingly difficult to find at times.

2

u/Lord_Halowind 15h ago

What brands would you recommend that guarantee 120 hertz?

2

u/Winter-Donut7621 15h ago

Its been years since I bought my TV. I think most of the top end brands should have it. My tv is Sony, but I'm not sure that all Sonys will have that. Sorry it's been so long since I've looked at TVs.

2

u/Lord_Halowind 15h ago

I have a friend who has a Sony and loves it. I'll keep my eyes out. Thank you!

2

u/Winter-Donut7621 15h ago

I've loved mine as well, you're welcome!

3

u/eojen 17h ago

I also loved that they gave us a large time jump. Made it feel like I was reading a fun fantasy novel series. I always find that sequels that take place right after the first movie are missing out on the ability to deeper world-building between stories. Makes the world feel a lot more lived in.

Wow that cgi water looks so good it makes me question why they didn’t just use actual water

29

u/khinzaw 19h ago

In behind the scenes footage they actually did sometimes when the actors and water needed to interact. They would have the actor doing things in water so that the water interacting with the actor was real and they didn't need to simulate it, then they would generate all the water surrounding it.

u/Icy_Smoke_733 19h ago

Everything you are looking at is CGI.

Looks like a still from a documentary.

2

u/SyrioForel 15h ago

What gives it away as CG is the fact that every creature has exactly the same skin texture, with exactly the same line pattern. They are just copy/pasting the same 3D model.

What makes real living animals look better than CG is the fact that each of them is a little bit different from each other. I’m surprised they didn’t bother making these slight alterations for literally the most CG-heavy film of all time, it would add some much realism to the scene, even if it’s just subconscious.

First one was a classic story of eco love and the flaws of humanity, the second had the exact same themes, but with cooler animation and some more depth with interactions of different communities of people, as well as some cloning ideas, and maybe the possibility that people aren’t all that black/white as with the admiral/military dude and his son.

I’m hoping the third has even more depth on the morality scale. And more cool tech from humanity.

4

u/AbsurdlyAddicted 19h ago

Way of Water was a great time for me. I can always count on Cameron to provide a fully earnest film, he's always committed to the bit and confident in his world and that's something a lot of filmmakers seem to be afraid of these days. While most films desire to be "in on the joke", overtly self-referential, and laugh alongside audiences, Avatar is breath of fresh air in the opposite direction.

2

u/habdragon08 18h ago

I have a gut feeling that the stories are gonna get a lot deeper. Criticizing the movies for being overly simple now is like criticizing harry Potter after Chamber of Secrets for being too childish.

3

u/mountainyoo 19h ago

one of the images of all time

3

u/Not-User-Serviceable 19h ago

I loved the first movie. Second movie was meh. Not really looking forward to any more.

I really wish James Cameron was working on new adventures.

Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, T2, True Lies, Titanic, Avatar... He's too good for this repetition to be all we get from him for the rest of his career.

11

u/GamingTatertot Steven Spielberg Enthusiast 19h ago

James Cameron getting to craft stories in a world of his own creation sounds pretty good to me for a career closer

10

u/ewynn2019 19h ago

Avatar made $2.923 billion globally

Avatar 2 made $2.32 billion globally

Cameron reportedly made $445 million off those 2 moves.

Regardless of the views on reddit, these films print money. There isn't a financial incentive to do anything else.

5

u/Worthyness 17h ago

Initial suspicion is the incels that brigade everything on the internet that isn't felating the patriarchy are doing most of it.

There was too much time between the first 2 movies. I LOVED the first one, but by the time the second movie came out I already lost all interest. Started the second movie a few times but could never finish it.

Looks like the other two. I hope the story is more interesting than #2 was.

Next up Avatar: Grass and Poison.

followed up by, Avatar: Earth and Steel.

And finally it all culminates with:

Avatar: The Pokemon Pandora Champion.

Electric and Psychic.

Hot damn I loved the booster pack. Forever made me love the combination of yellow and purple, arguably the best colour combination ever.

I'm interested in how captian Ahab in the 2nd movie develops after the whaling attack cost him his limbs. Will he seek revenge on the whale, dragging his crew on a periless And fruitless voyage in search of the whale that got away so they can harvest their precious ambergris?

u/dnarevolutions 18h ago

I'm convinced at this point James Cameron will make an Avatar movie for each element there is, fully immerse the cast into that element and somehow be able to film it.

1

u/coolguy420weed 18h ago

0 for 2 so far. Get it together James.

1

u/FriedCammalleri23 18h ago

I do not see any Fire or Ash present in this image

1

u/Virt_McPolygon 17h ago

I only watched the second one recently and immediately regretted not seeing it in 3D at the cinema, like I did the first. I won't make that mistake again.

This might as well have been an image from Avatar: The Way of Water.

u/Prize_Instance_1416 17h ago

Yawnsville. I’m hoping for a decent story to accompany the lavish visual.
Corp bad guy trashing natives nature preserves won’t do it for me this time.

u/DataDude00 17h ago

Just waiting for this to revolve around a comet approaching in the sky...
