There should be a camera on the front of the tram that reads the plate. For every minute that the tram is stuck because of the vehicle, it adds to the fine that’s automatically sent to the vehicle owner. The video is stored so if the driver disputes it, the evidence is available to the transit operator.

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 21h ago

A tow truck should immediately be called as soon as a problem is noticed and the driver should pay steep fines for blocking trams in this manner. Get the car out of there as soon as possible.

486

u/OR_Miata 20h ago

I live near this route that’s usually what happens. Except the tow truck usually takes longer to get there than it takes the driver to leave.

299

u/SmoothOperator89 19h ago

Pay the tow company a premium to get there in 5 minutes and charge the driver the extra cost to get their vehicle back from the impound lot.

170

u/ShamScience 19h ago

No no no! We have morons around here who drive tow trucks, and they do race each other to get to a site first, and cause a whole lot more crashes along the way. One this week took a corner next to me far too sharply and nearly took my arm with him.

So I think maybe a different solution to this problem, please.

My dad drives a tram. That’s his wet dream lol

4

u/Onebraintwoheads 17h ago

Is it as mindnumbing as it looks? It's gotta be stressful trying to stay vigilant, but at the same time doing the same route has to dull the wits, yeah?

8

u/tranimal00 17h ago

The homeless are pretty aggressive where my dad works. Plus stupid stuff like this. He had a car take a right at an intersection says no turn on red. He ignored that and the light rail making the turn. Tbones the car and then my dad has to do paperwork drug test all that fun stuff a 60 year old wants to do lol

Avoiding competition and focusing on maximizing effective work would be key here. That means ending the privatized tow truck companies and centralizing it within the state.

u/juwisan 12h ago

No need. The company charges as soon as they are called. It costs them money to get there and that’s typically already something between 120 and 200 bucks. Driver should get the bill for that whether he shows in time or not.

But I would actually appreciate if they got a hefty fine on top as well and lose their license for like 3 months. Some models of tram in my city can hold upwards of 300 people. So being a dick like this may block 300 people from getting where they want or need to be, worst case it ends up costing them money, e.g. when they miss a train or show up to work too late due to such behavior.

5

u/a-goateemagician 18h ago

Crude solution, but they make jacks on wheels that can lift up the tires of cars— it takes like 5 people to move a dead Tesla X a few hundred feet, I doubt it would take much… but it would be incredibly annoying for drivers, or you’d need extra people on the train to make sure it doesn’t like get hijacked or something

On second thought this may be a bad idea but I’ll still post this to see if there’s any discussion that comes out of it if

I vote for manually moving it with the tram.

11

u/used_octopus 17h ago

That's a very polite way of saying 'ram the fucking car out the fucking way, and then ram the driver up nos ass with a spiked bat. "

13

u/jrdiver 17h ago

That particular train doesn't look set up for that kind of work... Needs a bit more protection on this sheet metal... more like the big cargo train engines

8

u/Hot-Win2571 Mildly Flair 15h ago

Yes, the train was underdesigned for ensuring the speedy completion of its rounds. Train should be designed, and authorized, to push aside obstacles.

I'm willing for it to be necessary for the train driver to check that the car is unoccupied before pushing it aside.

33

u/structural_nole2015 20h ago

My wife was stuck on the light rail a couple weeks ago because of this situation. The operator came on board and said there's a delay on the tracks. The a few minutes later, he said a tow truck is on it's way. Then a few minutes later, she said she saw a guy sprinting down the sidewalk to get in the car.

Crazy cause the line wasn't even on its regular track. It usually goes through a transit tunnel, but because of construction, they detoured the trains up through an old route that still had the tracks in the roadway.

6

u/gtbeam3r 15h ago

To be fair, if that's not a typically uses track, I could see how someone could get lax about it. Still dumb AF to park on rails!

2

u/44problems 16h ago

Pittsburgh?

12

u/Koolaid04 18h ago

I'm thinking of all the people that were possibly late for work/medical appointments. Work won't care that you're late because one dude was oblivious to his surroundings.

6

u/Isotheis 16h ago

I'm pretty sure that if it happens in Brussels, it's policy to just scratch/push the cars. Just gotta wait for greenlight from the dispatcher.

2

u/UniversalAdaptor 2h ago

Then the owner should be drawn and quartered in a public square, to make an example of them

u/evenstevens280 21h ago

And there's a multiplier depending on how many people are on the tram at that time, and how many people were at the next stop.

44

u/Rakkis157 21h ago

And if they hit a threshold, they stop accumulating fines and start accumulating minimum jail time.

12

u/buttsmcfatts 20h ago

Hey now you're cookin'

25

u/DavidBrooker 19h ago

I don't know what city this is, but in many places with busy tram routes, it's very easy for this problem to cascade to the entire line since they have to maintain safe train spacing. In my city, a ten minute delay is easily affecting four or five trains during rush hour.

There was an accident recently (a driver made an illegal turn in front of a train) that shut down the line for an hour, and someone on my city's sub worked out that the damages in lost productivity - from people on the train line being delayed by an hour - was well over a million dollars.

7

u/dechets-de-mariage 17h ago

I have long felt that if someone causes a crash on the highway then they should get fined along these lines.

The tram should just be allowed to push the cars out the way.

16

u/bjeebus 19h ago

14

u/ShamScience 19h ago

What if we give the tram robot arms? With spikey claws! Just toss the cars aside!

Or, install big cow-catchers and just plough through the dickheads car.

12

u/angrymonkey 19h ago

The guy should be forced to pay everyone in the train their hourly rate for the time wasted.

20

u/ChanglingBlake ORANGE 21h ago

And every minute it takes them to leave after arriving on scene adds one to an exponent on the fine.

Two minutes has a $10 fine hit $100.

Third minute makes it hit $1000.

Fourth, 10,000.

So on and so forth.

That dallying in the car should have resulting in huge financial damages.

6

u/Bogavante 19h ago

Plus the hourly wage equivalent of each passenger and the conductor paid out for the time inconvenienced.

10

u/ChronoChigger420 20h ago

$500/min. No more of these stupid $25 fines, those are completely meaningless.

11

u/Thisoneissfwihope 19h ago

Do it like Finland does, and make the fines a multiple of salary.

1

u/MurasakiGames 19h ago

1 minute = 1 year salary, 2 minutes = 2 year salaries; I can get behind that.

3

u/Panzerv2003 21h ago

Yes this is the way

2

u/Hatta00 18h ago

There should be a cow catcher on the front of the tram that allows it push obstacles out of the way.

2

u/Koalastamets 16h ago

I mean I guess you could do that. I was thinking Mad Max style spikes to just demolish the car

2

u/domine18 16h ago

674

u/Tak-Hendrix 22h ago

Do these trains not have horns? Engineer should have just held that shit down the second this guy started taking his time to walk to his car.

I grew up in a medium size town with tramway lines. I only saw a car parked in a way that was impeding the tram once, and the situation was solved in what I thought was the best way possible. Four rugby player looking dudes (south of France, they have a distinctive look and attitude) asked the tram driver to let them off. Once outside, they just went over to the car and tipped it on its side. I can only imagine the face of the asshole when they came back to their car flipped over.

16

u/TootsNYC 19h ago

14

u/groberschnitzer 21h ago

Right around the corner where i live, the tram is getting blocked every few weeks (because the street is narrow and the cars get bigger every year). It takes just minutes until somebody from the tram company arrives to write a notice to the police. And of the driver does not come back soon, the car will be towed away quite soon after. Blocking rail traffic is quite serious here.

83

u/bun-Mulberry-2493 22h ago

Don't the trams have right of way!, in which case plough into the unless shit.

115

u/BromineFromine 22h ago

5

u/heansepricis 14h ago

I operate light rail and had a car plow in to me full tilt when i had the right of way. The only thing i felt was me hitting the track brake. We don’t even have seatbelts because the train always wins.

The car looked like an accordion and the train just needed it’s s skirt (bumper) replaced.

10

6

u/Shinigami4238 21h ago

Pretty sure that would damage the tram, which would cause them to have to shut it down longer while they shuttle everyone to their destination.

6

u/Chimaerogriff 20h ago

Bad tram then. In my hometown, opening your car door so that it interferes with the tram will give you an unhinged and damaged car door and a perfectly fine tram.

6

u/Shinigami4238 20h ago

This is one of the rear quarter panels, a better chance of hitting the more durable frame. It also looks like it's angled to scrape down the side of the tram, which could break the glass on the tram doors. That area may even have a rule for their drivers to stop for any obstruction if able to avoid damages that could cause shutdowns of a line.

3

u/Onebraintwoheads 17h ago

My best buddy in college and I couldn't walk side by side down hallways; we were both into the strongman stuff. Man, it was fun to be out walking and have legit reason to move people's cars. Depended on the size, but if we both took an axle, we could get a shoulder down and push it sideways. Sometimes folks were blocked in when someone parallel parked too close, or city buses weren't able to proceed because a car was too far from the curb.

If we could get permission, we would. But in situations like this we'd grin like idiots and head out to move a car clear. Most anyone who watched was happy about it, so we never got into trouble. And it's not like we were trying to damage the car.

3

u/axmv1675 15h ago

Who tf designed this road?

3

3

u/MeekerCutiePie 12h ago

I imagine interfering with a city's transportation infrastructure is a crime? The police should have been waiting for them. The idea that you can block a train for 10 minutes and its totally fine is insane

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia Friday, this video shows a city bus pushing a car down the street.

This is WAY more than “mildly” infuriating… 😡

My mom was in out city shopping and noticed a tram commotion, just like this. She walks by not paying much attention to it before seeing that the car that lets the trams pile up behind it belongs to my aunt/her sister 🙄

This was pre mobile phones so she ran from store to store nearby and fucking yelled at the top of her lungs for her, she‘s nowhere to be found…

My mom out of desperation asks if the by standing men couldnt just… lift the car up? and move it a couple cm, which they actually did!

Trams could continue their ride thankfully and after a while my aunt strolls back to her car with the yarn she wanted to get only to get the yelling of her life from my mom

If it weren't so infuriating it would honestly be quite impressive how fucking stupid people (or at least this person AND my aunt) can be

There is no reason to have a parking there

Who designed this garbage ???? They left themselves 3 inches ? And trusting people to park PERFECTLY? Morons

The tram tracks in Portland were installed way after the rest of the street was and maintaining street parking was a huge point of emphasis of the people when the tracks were installed. Those tram tracks are also a live traffic lane in most of the city, so not only is that person parked on the tracks, but they are also sticking out into a lane of traffic making people have to move over and potentially encroach on the other lane when driving.

That car is way more than 3 inches over the white line. Their entire rear tire and taillight is over the line. Every other car on the block was able to parallel park with like 6 inches to spare between themselves and the line. Space is at a premium in the urban core of major cities, so tight parking situations are too be expected. I've been in the area where this is a lot in Portland, and this is not even close to being the tightest parking in the city.

Blocking the train? Yeah agreed

Blocking the building entry? That's just stupid, it's not blocking anything

Is he even aware?

1

u/VisibleCoat995 19h ago

I would bet real money he doesn’t even make a connection between the stopped streetcar and himself. That oblivious and up his own ass.

u/SuperMims1 19h ago

Where police?!?

1

u/unomas49 19h ago

It really infuriated me, I don't understand how there are people with so much patience, I would have punched it so hard that it would have gone from first gear to fifth gear in 0.5 seconds...
