Trump is going to launch a trade war against California in the next few days.

13.7k

u/pm_me_ur_ParusMajors North Carolina 19h ago

Considering how much agriculture and manufacturing actually come out of California, this would have a substantial impact on the rest of the US. The California gdp is as much as in the top 5 gdp's in the world.

u/ToughTalkingTurtle 19h ago

Is it true that he didn't place tariffs on Russia?

1.2k

u/Songshiquan0411 18h ago

Yes. His administration officials have tried the line of "we already sanction them, we don't really do any trade with Russia already". Okay I didn't know we did that much trade with Vanuatu but you still hit them with tariffs.

994

u/bdone2012 18h ago

They put tariffs on the Heard and McDonald island. It’s near the South Pole and is just a bunch of penguins, no humans. I can’t believe I need to say this but putting tariffs on Russia makes more sense than putting them on a island full of penguins.

My guess is that the ChatGPT didn’t think about putting tariffs on Russia because of the sanctions and somehow it got confused with the Heard and McDonalds island.

There’s a strong theory that the whole thing was done using chatGPT because this is the exact plan you get when you ask how to implement tariffs from the us to other countries.

We take tariffs on our beautiful Heard Island very seriously. We will be consulting all mammals and flightless birds and will make an announcement in the near future detailing our response.

Because they don’t fly.

Russians have hacked the Tariff signal chat and swapped Russia for Heard and McDobald island. The Russian hacker was under the name of Not Jeff Goldberg, so nobody suspected foul play.

My guess is that the ChatGPT didn’t think about putting tariffs on Russia because of the sanctions and somehow it got confused with the Heard and McDonalds island.

Or more simply they just took out the allied countries when making the list.

It makes me sick to hear Russia referred to as an allied country but I guess we really are there.

My dad, too. I remember him explaining what McCarthyism was when I was in elementary. When Velveeta Voldemort won in '16, he said it was good because Russia would bomb us if Hillary won, and I remember thinking 'when the fuck did capitulating to Russia become a good thing????'

When people were reading through the Signal text thread, there was a lot of speculation that Hegseth used ChatGPT to word his responses as well. It can be difficult to distinguish between something poorly written by AI and something poorly written by an idiot that's trying to sound competent though.

7

u/well-of-wisdom 18h ago

Elon will be pissed when he hears that they used chatGPT over his xAI.

8

u/FunkyMcFunkerSin 18h ago

Yeah yeah, but those penguins have always taken advantage of US good will. Amerika first baby!!!!

2

u/BringOn25A 17h ago

It’s near the South Pole and is just a bunch of penguins

Penguins have same sex partnerships, it makes total trumpian sense he would slap tariff's on what they produce.

2

u/a_leap 17h ago

The US sanctions Iran and Syria more severely than Russia but those countries made the list of tariffs. It took human effort to ensure Russia was not tariffed, and is the only country the US trades with that is not tariffed.

2

u/ikkleste 17h ago

I think Russia will have been taken off specifically. There are other countries that you have a trade surplus with, or as you say the Penguins. They still got landed with the baseline 10%. They can give the excuse that they're already sanctioned, but that seems like back justification for a decision made for other reasons. If it was the extant sanctioning reason why have they not given the same attention to detail about other special cases, like penguins.

2

u/absentmindedjwc 16h ago

lets be honest, they used Grok, not ChatGPT. OpenAI might of at least understood the assignment...

3

u/Calderis Washington 17h ago

They also put tariffs on an island that is inhabited... By a US military base.

They're so fucking stupid were tariffing ourselves.

2

u/StoneCypher 17h ago

he just zeroed russia out by hand with his hurricane marker

37

u/Junior_Chard9981 16h ago edited 15h ago

This is the exact response needed for every Conservative who attempts to use the "but sanctions" line.

It is easier for them to continue looking for excuses to rationalize why Russia was not also heavily tarrifed versus facing the reality that is a US president who is either sympathetic towards or compromised by the Russians, if not both.

The article below is from the beginning of March, and it looks like they've already removed sanctions for someone named Karina Rotenberg, who was sanctioned in 2022.

White House seeks plan for possible Russia sanctions relief, sources say

The White House has asked the State and Treasury departments to draft a list of sanctions that could be eased for U.S. officials to discuss with Russian representatives in the coming days as part of the administration's broad talks with Moscow on improving diplomatic and economic relations, the sources said.

The sanctions offices are now drawing up a proposal for lifting sanctions on select entities and individuals, including some Russian oligarchs, according to the sources.

Standard Trump move: Step 1) Create a stupid crisis through some preposterous action. Step 2) Stop or remove that preposterous action which created the crisis. Step 3) Take credit for "solving the crisis."

We've come to learn that tens of millions of Americans are profoundly detached from the details or basics of what is going on politically, economically and governmentally. Sadly "I did something!" (as a way of characterizing imposing tariffs) and then "There was a crisis, but I solved it!" (characterizing ending most tariffs) will play positively with this huge number of detached/confused Americans.

3

u/chaos_nebula 17h ago

There was near unanimous bipartisan support for sanctions during Trump's first term and he just ignored them.

This is literally it. He's just doing what Putin is telling him to do. The point is to destroy the United States, all of it.

172

u/JohnnySnark Florida 19h ago

Well, all of the Americas too. Russia needs a weaker Canada and Mexico for their ultimate goals

150

u/Moon_whisper 17h ago

Canada and Mexico aren't weaker though. Everybody is just making new partners, better and stronger alliances and USA is going to be left on the sidelines like an aged hooker.

54

u/Clerence69 17h ago

"Like an aged hooker", beautifully put

18

u/Moon_whisper 17h ago

She sold herself so often, she is pretty cheap and desperate now. And the world isn't going to want her. Other countries sell oranges, bananas, grapes, etc. California isn't needed. World is going electric. Other countries can sell meat, don't need Texas. Bonus, growth hormone free meat.

Gambling? Dubai is pretty spectacular. For a lot of the world, it is cheaper to travel to. Technology? Japan, China, South Korea are kicking butt in those areas.

USA isn't needed. And honestly, if Trump government was gone tomorrow, USA is still an aged hooker. Just way to insane and unstable to trust. The American people wanted this government, want the death of democracy, the death of freedom, the death of liberty, the stripping of human rights. The Natzis and fascists are out in droves.

The people who swore to protect liberty & freedom for all, democracy and the costitution have done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the face of fascism and the blatent gutting of all the ideologies USA pretends to stand for.

The American people cannot be trusted. Will not be trusted again anytime soon.

There is literally nothing the USA can offer the world that will be trusted or even wanted. For all intents and purposes, USA is done, finish, and not a super power.

A government for the people, by the people...not a good reflection on the type of people there. While the world recognizes not all people in the USA are like that, there is enough like that to make it happen.

Most of the world doesn't want, or need, to do business with people that low on morals or so devoid of humanity.

u/joshdoereddit 17h ago

Canada and Mexico having to scramble with the world economy makes them weaker right now.

The whole west is weaker now because of trump's moves. Yes, other countries will find other new allies and drop the US but that doesn't stop the trump admin selectively attacking these former allies with not just more economic wars via sanctions but also military actions.

15

u/Moon_whisper 17h ago

Dude, Europe is already preparing for war. Most countries are back to everybody doing military service. Germany auto makers are already making military vehicles.

China can supply the world on military good while old factories are being upgraded. It will not take as long as you might think to get up to par.

The world has done it multiple times. They are well aware and not biting their nails in fear at the loss of the traitors.

Make it cheap so oligarchs can get the fuck out of russia and buy all the assets cheap. Better learn russian :)

78

u/77NorthCambridge 18h ago

All they have to do is pay Trump $5 million to become American citizens, sanctions no longer apply, and they can freely travel to the US.

8

u/PenaltyDesperate3706 18h ago

Next scene is trump picking up an additional fight with the EU re unfreezing Russian oligarchs’ assets for a 25% commission

10

u/77NorthCambridge 18h ago

You mean like putting "tariffs" on Canada to justify buying Russian potash?

9

u/PenaltyDesperate3706 18h ago

Nope. I mean making the EU banking institutions give back whatever they have on frozen Russian assets so the oligarchs can bring those funds to “invest” in the US.

If I were Canada, I would set an export tax on sales of Canadian potash to the US “because all Canadians are in this together”

Putin figured it out: you don't HAVE to bomb a country or send war planes etc., and wreck everything, and risk retaliation... You can put the right stooge in power and he'll just hand it over, almost fully intact.

5

u/DrZaious 18h ago

Read the grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence, it's like Putin told Trump to do those things. Which is probably why Trump wanted the DOI on display in the oval.

Putin openly thinks that democracy is a sham. If you know anything about Putin, he would get off on destroying America using the same methods which inspired it's sovereignty.

3

u/Unique-Coffee5087 17h ago

And disrupt the Alliances.

That part, at least, won't work as much as Putin thinks it will. Unlike the top down structure of the old Warsaw Pact, The Western alliances are made up of independent nations who can think for themselves and formulate their own policies. For that matter, right now Canada is working on building an entirely independent kind of association, now that the United States has abdicated its role as leader. Similarly, a trade alliance is forming in Asia that excludes the United States.

Putin naturally thinks that the loss of the United States will lead to the disorganization and demoralization of other members of the economic, diplomatic, and military alliances that have unified the free world. It is fortunate that his outlook is so incorrect.

3

u/MolitovMichellex United Kingdom 16h ago

3

u/Timely-Hospital8746 17h ago

It's not just Russia. Many of the Silicon Valley tech bros (the ones you saw lined up behind him at his inauguration) have been talking about this for 10+ years. They want to tear down the federal government in order to replace it with a series of tech powered city states.

The remaining areas where they decide having a federal framework is effective (military, intelligence, things like that) are going to be privatized. Peter Thiel for example wants to gobble up more and more of the CIA functionality into his Palantir corporation.

Thiel in particular is insidious about this shit. He saw how much money can be made by sitting in the center of commerce and taking a little fee like he did with Paypal. Now he wants to sit at the center of the flow of public money (a gargantuan pile of money beyond any corps wildest dream) and take a little fee from *everything*.

2

u/SeaworthinessSad7300 15h ago

I'm very surprised there's not a lot more questions being asked about why no tarrifs were put on Russia.

Putin must have paid him so much money into a private bank account or have something so incriminating on him. Because he's basically Putin's lap dog

2

u/maskaddict Canada 15h ago

It's still so weird to me how this is just common knowledge at this point. Everyone (who pays attention and has a brain) just understands that the President of the United States is a paid stooge for a hostile foreign power, and every action he takes is calculated to weaken American economy, military, infrastructure, disaster preparedness, and --maybe most importantly-- unity.

He wants you weak, broke, scared, unprepared, and angry, so that his masters -- your enemies -- can take you down with greater ease. And he's getting it done with phenomenal speed and efficiency. And everyone just understands this, except for a huge number of people whose cultlike devotion have them convinced that up is down and left is right.

It's terrifying, but it's also so profoundly weird.

They’re talking about the 2/3 of the US voting population that either wanted this or didn’t care. Those of us not in the cult or burned to a crisp with complacency don’t get to just wipe our hands and say ‘not my fault’ just because we didn’t vote on the wrong side of history.

There are more of them than us, but if we don’t clean up the mess no one will. So put on that thinking cap and get ready to do something about it, or serve. It’s an even easier choice this time.

If it was Trump/Putin's plan to gain strength against the rest of the world then I would say have both categorically failed. The US is the weakest it has been in 50 years. That’s a bit simplistic.

Trump isn’t just a stooge of Putin. They support each other because they’re likeminded and have similar goals. They both want to return to a pre-modern world order where internationalism is a myth and major powers carve up the world in spheres of influence and are allowed to do whatever they wish within their sphere. A world where everything is a zero sum game and you can only win by someone else losing. They want to beat everyone else, not just win.

Of course that’s not how the real world works, multiple parties can win in foreign relations or domestic politics. Countries work together for mutual benefit: But they can’t stand that so they’re trying to force the world to fit their imagined ideal.

And then the 1% that pulled out of the market in January will swoop in and buy everything for pennies on the dollar just like the Russian oligarchs after the USSR collapsed. Russia wins the wealthy win and America gets fucked by becoming Russia 2.0

u/wassou93_ 16h ago

Correction: For Israhell benefit.

1

u/theHoopty 15h ago

Tell me why else you would brag about army recruiting numbers going on because obviously people want to serve under Trump (not actually true but…) and then we have an article out today that says Hegseth is trying to reduce the US Army by 90,000 troops.

u/PlaidDreamsofMe 14h ago

Exactly right

1

u/Mtgnotmtg 14h ago

/his billionaire buddies benefit. The want some type of techno-fascist feudal system where the U.S. is basically split up into big company towns all controlled by individual oligarchs with no central government to contend with. It’s a half baked scheme funded and thought of by Peter Thiel and Curtis Yarvin

I honestly think that’s just a conspiracy theory. He 100% wants to destroy the country for his own benefit. He’s actively making people poorer by crashing the stock market to make himself wealthier when he buys everything cheaply.

1

u/enonmouse 12h ago

His own first, then putins… he thinks it’s his turn to be on top he’ll squeeze as much money and revenge out as he can before someone stops him.

This is what people seem to not understand. This is what he wants. Russia won the Cold War.

The rest of the world will continue and live on. America is fucked.

I think this is the case, but he has a bunch of competing interests within his group. There's the technocrats like Peter Thiel that want a complete societal collapse, the investors that just want extreme market volatility they can profit from, and countries like Russia who want to diminish the influence the US has on the world. Trump is taking money from all of them, and I'm sure he doesn't even know his endgame

3

u/StoneCypher 18h ago

I think there may be a number of new Republicans who just tried to be along for the ride and genuinely didn't realize how much of it wasn't bombastics

I'm hoping the bile rises in a few of their throats. It wouldn't take many

Suddenly the Civil War movie with Texas and California on the same side would make alot more sense if Texas also would be hit economically

u/irokain75 11h ago

People really aren't fucking getting it at all. It isn't about "buying the dip." It isn't about oligarchs crashing the economy to buy property on the cheap. It isn't about the ruling class. It isn't about money at least not anymore because money already got the fascists into power. Now it is about burning it all the fuck down. The entire US economy. I think over the past month 7 trillion in wealth no longer exists in the stock market beacuse of actions the Trump administration was ordered to take by the Heritage Foundation.

You all remember Heritage Foundation right? Oh right you don't because you all have spent the entire past 2 god damn months being distracted by Musk and Trump. By fucking oligarchs and techbros. By endlessly bitching about Bernie got robbed and how the DNC is corrupt and how Democrats who are the minority party that this country fucking voted out and is now all of a sudden wanting to have power again.

We need to stop worrying about money. Money is absolutely fucked at this point. There is no fixing what has been done until we get the fucking fascists out. The AOC and Bernie "fight oligarchy" tour has been nothing but a far left distraction to keep us angry over fucking money and scared about losing our jobs and our healthcare so we don't fucking fight back against fascism Think long and hard on why they named oligarchy as the primary cause to fight. And look at history at when oligarchy became a thing. Oligarchs only came into being after the destruction of the USSR. Oligarchs in the US are NOT who we need to be fighting because when they turn up the US will already be gone. It is the fucking fascists in the god damn white house. It is the fucking fascists in the god damn congress. it is the fucking fascists in SCOTUS.

There is no class war if we don't have our human and civil rights and THAT is what we need to be fighting for right now.

3

u/dynodebs 17h ago

It's all about the money. The oligarchs clustered around Trump will make money as stocks go down, and again when they go up. They'll pick up any unconsidered trifles they find lying around when they hit the right price, and use these to hedge against the future.

For this, they'll pay Trump a 'commission' on their sales and purchases; the big law firms are paying a pitch fee like cheap market traders and pardons like Nikola's Trevor Milton's for securities fraud crimes now have charges scale attached.

You're fucked, and so are we.

u/Practical_Shift6970 16h ago

He's only going to destroy the country east of the Rockies. There are geological borders that would make an armed suppression of California difficult at best.

This whole Trump agenda is to line the pockets of rich people. If you can't see that you're either a fool or collaborator.

I actually think that there's more Putin than Thiel to this, but I'm sympathetic to your viewpoint

What, that Donald Trump is a Russian asset who, along with Peter Thiel and Curtis Yarvin, is intentionally destroying the country?

It's a pretty common (and growing) sentiment

I don’t think Trump gives AF about destroying the country, he just didn’t want to go to jail and now he owes a bunch of bastards bigtime. I feel like it’s the equivalent of the grandparent at the kid’s sleepover leaving money on the counter for pizza for but not caring about what they order because he’ll be asleep long before it gets here.

1

u/ShakeAndBakeThatCake 15h ago

He's going to put the country into a civil war. Blue versus red states.

1

u/Oraxy51 13h ago

Thing is greed doesn’t even make sense when you’re that old. Tf you going to do with a billion dollars if you got maybe 5-10 years of life left? More money than he will ever need it’s just greed.

Then again greed doesn’t make sense.

1

u/DanceDelievery 13h ago

It's not like the tariffs against other countries aren't already 100% harmful to the us, so he clearly doesn't care about whats harmful or not.
